Honda Cars : 2010 Honda Insight Twelve Month Test - Month 1 | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

October 2009: The Insight goes to work
By Aaron Gold, About.com

Getting to know our Honda Insight
We've now completed the first month of our downsizing experiment, in which we shelved our trusty mid-size Honda Accord wagon for a subcompact Honda Insight hybrid hatchback.

My biggest concern was that my wife Robin, who would be doing most of the driving, would hate the Insight. Robin likes small cars, but she also likes to go fast, and at 98 horsepower the Insight is anything but. So how does she like it? Well, the fact that she's put over 2,300 miles on it in the first month is a pretty good indication. As I mentioned in my First Thousand Miles blog entry, Robin doesn't find the Insight's small engine a problem. The Insight certainly doesn't take off like an Audi RS4 -- her favorite car; does she have good taste, or what? -- but it cruises comfortably at the supra-legal speeds she prefers.

My second concern was space for our family, which includes two kids, one who is 5'10" and rising, and a good-sized dog. I'm 5'6" and wasn't very happy with the Insight's back seat headroom, but 13-year-old Robert (the tall one) finds it comfortable enough -- you know how young people slouch today -- and 10-year-old Andrew isn't voicing any complaints either. The one thing we haven't done is stuff all five of us into the car at once; that'll happen next month when we take the kids and dog to my parents' place in Arizona for Thanksgiving.

Beast of burden
Robin used to do a lot of heavy hauling in the Accord wagon, primarily her massage table and all sorts of gear relating to our two horses. The massage table won't fit without folding the rear seats down, so that means she has to shift it in and out of the car as needed, although she doesn't mind. "I have to haul it in and out when I get to people's houses anyway, so it's not a big deal," she says. As for the horse stuff, well, this month she moved them to a new stable. No, we didn't use the Insight to haul the horses themselves, but she did manage to fit all of her horse-related gear into the Insight's cargo bay, as this photo shows. And if that wasn't enough, she even used it to carry a bail of hay. However, something dribbled onto the back seat and left a stain. I haven't tried cleaning it up yet, and I'm hoping like crazy that the Insight's environmentally-friendly "BioFabric" seat cloth will be as easy to clean as the regular cloth in our Accord; otherwise the Insight's cabin is going to look pretty ratty when we return it to Honda in 11 months.

Initial quality
The Insight didn't exhibit any build-quality problems aside from a slightly misaligned glovebox door, but then I wasn't expecting any -- not because it's a Honda, but because our Insight arrived with a little over 400 miles showing on the odometer. Honda insists our car's pre-delivery inspection wasn't any more thorough than what customers get at the dealerships, but it's clear they did a fair bit of driving just to make sure there were no bugs to be worked out. If that was the case, they seemed to have missed the Bluetooth speakerphone system; it seems to connect and disconnect from our Nokia phones at will. I'm not sure if it's faulty, badly designed, or if this is simply a case of user error.

Fuel economy
Fuel economy tells an interesting story. We averaged just over 40 MPG through most of the month, but as the odometer climbed past 2,000 miles, our average fuel economy began to increase suddenly, and we finished out the month at 41.4 MPG, even though neither Robin nor I have changed our driving styles. I've heard tales of hybrids getting better fuel economy after the first couple of thousand miles, so it'll be interesting to see if this trend continues. Incidentally, Robin prefers not to use the Insight's "Econ" mode, as it shuts off the air conditioning compressor when the car is stopped. (It's still pretty warm here in Los Angeles.) Between that and her Han Solo driving style, I'm very pleased with the Insight Hybrid's fuel economy. -- Aaron Gold

Honda Cars : 50th Anniversary Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept Official Details | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

Unknown | 7:39 AM

General Motors has given us a futuristic vision of technology and design with the 50th Anniversary Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept. Celebrating 50 years since the debut of the original Corvette Stingray Racer Concept in 1959, the latest addition to GM’s long line of stylistic show cars was first displayed at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show before it starred as “Sideswipe” in the movie Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

The overall idea of the 50th Anniversary Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept was to incorporate past design cues in a fully futuristic shape. Speaking specifically about the car, Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design, said: "By giving my creative team the freedom to design no-holds-barred vision concepts, it helps them push boundaries and look at projects from different perspectives."

The 50th Anniversary Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept is at this point solely a design exercise, not foreshadowing a production vehicle, though talk of the upcoming C7 Corvette has been circulating for some time.

Some of the concept’s features we could envisage making into a production Corvette one day include its clamshell hood, scissor-style doors, ergonomic seats, rear-view camera with night vision enhancement, and a high performance hybrid powertrain.

This latter element comes with interactive touch controls inside the cabin to allow the driver to customize the power and efficiency of the car and then share it with friends via an in-car camera system and advanced telemetrics.

For a full run-down of the potential hybrid and other powertrain options for the next-gen Corvette, check out John Voelcker's article over at Green Car Reports.

Honda Cars : Acura no longer gunning for Teir 1 luxury, will offer ’sensible’ luxury vehicles | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

Unknown | 7:25 AM

After dropping plans to produce an Acura NSX along with the cancellation of a V8 engine and a rear-wheel-drive program, Acura is reversing its direction in North America.

There is “a certain level of confusion” about Acura in the marketplace, Honda Motor Co. CEO Takanobu Ito told Automotive News. “We are in the midst of big changes. We’ve changed the direction of research and development.”

Ito said that he sees the “future of Acura as a merger of BMW and Audi–something between high technology and high performance.” But until Acura gets everything sorted out, it will be in a “low-growth period of developing new products,” Ito said.

Dealers who invested a lot of money in upgrading their showrooms are understandably angry. Dealer Dave Contant, who owns an Acura store in Mission Viejo, California, said dealers may not be able to wait out the transition.

“The direction of product will be completely different from where it was a few years ago,” Conant said. “The previous direction of shooting for being a Tier 1 luxury brand is not going to be the same.”

New products in the pipeline include the Acura ZDX crossover, which will be available later this winter, and the wagon version of the TSX, which will arrive next fall. Officials are also said to be hinting at an entry-level model that will compete with the BMW 1-Series and the Audi A1 (think of it as the revival of the RSX).

At a recent, dealership meeting, executives told dealers that they will introduces a new product every year, however, there is a delay in the pipeline.

Honda Cars : 2009 Annual Auto Reliability Survey: Domestics vs. the imports | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

Unknown | 7:11 AM

Asian vehicles continue to lead in car reliability, but a number of domestic and European automakers are showing improvements. Of the 48 models with top reliability scores, 36 are Asian—Toyota accounts for 18; Honda, eight; Nissan, four; and Hyundai/Kia and Subaru, three each. The rest come from Ford with eight; Mercedes-Benz, one; Volkswagen, two; and Volvo, one.

European brands continue to improve in reliability with a significant rebound from Mercedes-Benz and improvements from Volkswagen and Audi. Most Volvo and Porsche models have also done well in our survey.

Ford leads the domestics with about 90 percent of models scoring average or better in our survey. Overall 20 of the 48 GM models have average reliability, but only the Chevrolet Malibu V6 has above average reliability in our survey. Last year, we couldn’t recommend any Chrysler product due to low test scores and poor reliability, but this year the 4WD Dodge Ram did well in our tests and has average reliability.

However, more than one-third of Chrysler products are much worse than average in reliability. The graphs above shows the percentage of models that rate above average, average, and below average for Asian, European, and American brands.

Honda Cars : Scion announces September 2010 arrival in Canada | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

Unknown | 6:55 AM

(TORONTO) – Announced at a luncheon in St. Catharine’s today, SCION the automotive brand that maximizes personal expression will bust the performance and style conventions when it arrives at 45 SCION Dealers in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver in September, 2010.

At a Toyota dealer meeting in 2008, it was announced that SCION would be coming to Canada. Dealers were very excited about the possibility of adding SCION to their showrooms. All the while, Canadian enthusiasts were able to get a taste of the new brand with interactive concept vehicle displays and give-aways at auto shows in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

“This is a great time to launch SCION in Canada,” said Larry Hutchinson, Director of SCION in Canada. “As the auto industry emerges from recession, one of the largest and youngest demographics will be entering the marketplace. Young buyers will be looking to the ever-growing small car market. They are not only looking for a safe, high-quality and fuel efficient vehicle, it is important to them that the vehicle reflects their personality and lifestyle, and the stylish and trendy SCION brand will be there to fulfill that need.”

Built upon a “store within a store” format the initial 45 dealers for Canada include 18 in Montreal, 20 in Toronto and 7 in Vancouver. These dealers were chosen for both their location and the ability to address and anticipate the needs of the growing youth market. Dealer locations are centred in and around urban areas with above average youth populations.

Each dealer is already redefining their style to prepare for SCION entering their showrooms.

“The next generation of young car buyers is carving its own unique social and cultural experiences, and SCION dealers will be part of their lifestyle,” Hutchinson continued. “We are very excited to announce the 45 SCION dealers for Canada are already preparing for an edgy new car lineup and a whole new demographic of drivers.”

SCION will come to Canada with three vehicles:
The SCION tC compact sport coupe combines style and fun topped with a remarkable panorama moon roof;
The SCION xD blends personality in a subcompact five-door hatchback;
The SCION xB compact five-door hatchback delivers astounding spaciousness wrapped in a cubic cladding that’s game for urban adventure.

SCION is not only fuel efficient and stylish, it is all about personalization. Upgrades and accessories can be added to any SCION, from unique wheels, to shift knobs and sport pedals to satellite radio systems and a broad selection of TRD (Toyota Racing Development) performance enhancements. Every SCION’s safety system currently includes front dual-stage airbags, front seat mounted side airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags, three-point lap and shoulder belts for all occupants.

There will be more to see and hear from SCION throughout 2010, including the introduction of the lineup throughout the 2010 auto show season and sneak peek events that target the youth demographic and trend-setters. To keep on top of what is to come on SCION, Canadians can visit www.scionnation.ca.

Honda Cars : Car and Driver; Lingenfelter 455 T/A Concept | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

Unknown | 6:38 AM

All I can say is....wow....
I am still waiting for the conversion kit below though....
Take one part 2010 Camaro and add some ’70s Trans-Am . . .
Given Pontiac’s demise, it’s clear there won’t be any factory-baked Pontiac Trans-Am coming from General Motors. Enter the aftermarket, which has become suddenly eager to serve buyers wanting a new-school T/A. Indeed, joining the conversion kit offered by Phoenix is this
Lingenfelter take on turning your brand-new Camaro SS into the modern Trans-Am of your dreams. The concept debuts in the metal at this year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas.

Of course, Chevy looks won’t do, so there’s a new front fascia, a shaker hood, revised rear quarter-panels, functional front fender vents, and an integrated decklid spoiler. New lighting front and rear as well as 20-inch honeycomb wheels complete the exterior transformation, while new blue woven-vinyl seats and a metal-turned instrument panel add retro feel to the inside. We have to admit, this thing really does resemble the 1970s original, and we like it.

Given the company’s penchant for pumping up horsepower, of course Lingenfelter would rework the engine, too. Under the striped hood—there’s no huge screaming chicken as of now—sits an aluminum 455-cubic-inch (7.5-liter) V-8 block with a lofty 11.5:1 compression ratio, ported-and-polished Lingenfelter heads from the Corvette Z06’s LS7, a forged crankshaft, and high-flow intake. The custom stainless-steel exhaust comes courtesy of Corsa. Power output is quoted at 655 hp and 610 lb-ft of torque, up significantly from the 426 hp of a stock manual Camaro SS. Also present are a new twin-disc clutch and flywheel assembly and tougher rear half-shafts to withstand the extra grunt. Handling alterations are limited to the addition of Nitto tires.
