Ultra-efficient Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC will go on sale in January, with prices starting from £19,400

Honda has announced that a new 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine will join the Civic line-up from January 2013, boasting CO2 emissions of just 94g/km.

The new engine produces 118bhp and 300Nm of torque and comes paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. As well as emitting just 94g/km of CO2, it’s also capable of 78.5mpg.

Buyers can order the new engine in SE, ES or range-topping EX trim. The level of equipment is the same as any other Civic, but 1.6 i-DTEC models get newly designed 16-inch alloy wheels.

SE cars get electric windows and air-conditioning, while ES models get extras like cruise control. Opt for EX trim and luxuries like sat-nav and leather upholstery are thrown in.

First deliveries of the Civic 1.6 i-DTEC are in January 2013. Prices start from £19,400 for entry-level SE models, with mid-range ES cars costing £20,595 and range-topping EX variants costing £23,175.

After making the announcement on the development of a new 1.6-liter turbocharged diesel engine at the Geneva Salon, Honda is now ready to show its smaller displacement oil burner on the latest Civic hatchback. 
 
The 1.6-liter i-DTEC is the first engine in Europe to feature Honda's Earth Dreams Technology series (in North America, the automaker introduced the series with the new Accord's 2.4-liter petrol unit).
 
It is rated at 118HP (120PS) at 4,000 rpm and 300Nm (221.3 lb-ft) at 2,000 rpm with Honda stating that the Civic will return a combined consumption of just 3.6lt/100km (65.3 mpg US or 78.5 mpg UK) with CO2 emission of only 94 g/km (for cars with 16-inch wheels). 

Together with the 1.6-liter i-DTEC Civic, Honda also plans to show the 2013 CR-Z Hybrid Coupe facelift, the EV-Ster Concept electric roadster, the European market CR-V and a special display with the an original first generation Civic at its Paris Motor Show stand.

The new 2012 Honda Civic WTCC has officially entered its final development stages as the Japanese carmaker presented the final exterior and began track testing of its FIA World Touring Car Championship racecar at the Vallelunga circuit, near Rome, Italy, following the car's ‘shakedown' on July 27 at the Vairano circuit near the J.A.S. Motorsport factory in Milan.

 

The Japanese carmaker's WTCC contender is based on the European market Civic hatchback and features a special aero package with an extended front and rear skirt and other additional aerodynamic elements such as the large rear wing. 

But what makes this Civic really stand out from its production brethren is the bespoke 1.6-liter 4 cylinder direct injection turbocharged HR-412E petrol engine. 

Honda has not released output numbers nor did it say if it has any plans to offer a turbocharged engine on its production models in the near future.

However, during the presentation of the turbocharged unit last week, Daisuke Horiuchi, WTCC Development Project Leader at Honda R&D said that, "We believe the innovations that have led to this revolutionary engine will also lead to benefits beyond the race track, helping us to further increase the efficiency of our road car engines."

Back to the racing model, Honda noted that testing would continue throughout the year with 2009 WTCC champion Gabriele Tarquini sitting behind the wheel. 

"Although I'd never driven the new Civic before, funnily, when I sat in the seat for the first time I immediately felt I was in a Honda," said Tarquini.

"The body work is precise and the engine feels great. But this is just the first track test, so there is so much more for us to work on. The car looks beautiful too and will, I'm sure, wow all the WTCC fans around the world when it makes its debut in Suzuka later this year," he added. 

Beginning at Suzuka in October this year, Honda will enter three races of the 2012 FIA World Touring Car Championship with one car, driven by Tiago Monteiro, as it prepares for full entry in 2013.

Honda Cars : Honda unveils new turbocharged 1.6 litre race mill | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

Honda has announced the introduction of a new direct-injection turbocharged 1.6 litre mill to be plonked into a Civic, but don’t get too excited – the engine is a racing unit meant for the Civic taking part in the FIA World Touring Car Championship.

The HR412E, as it’s called, is a completely bespoke unit fully conforming to FIA regulations for the WTCC. Developed at Honda’s R&D centre in Tochigi, Japan, the engine has been delivered to the Honda Racing Team JAS workshop in Milan, Italy, where the Civic WTCC is being developed.

“The HR412E heralds a new generation of high performance racing engines from Honda. We believe the innovations that have led to this revolutionary engine will also lead to benefits beyond the race track, helping us to further increase the efficiency of our road car engines,” said Daisuke Horiuchi, WTCC Development Project Leader at Honda R&D.

Whether this will translate into turbocharging making its way into the company’s road-going cars like the supposed new Type R hatch being bandied about remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, the Civic WTCC is set to take part in three races this season, with ex-F1 driver Tiago Monteiro behind the wheel, starting at Suzuka in October. Honda is set to compete in the full FIA World Touring Car Championship in 2013.
