The all-new 2013 Toyota RAV4 SUV is a secret no more, at least as far as its exterior and interior looks are concerned, after a second set of photos made their way across the internet. 
 
We'll remind you that earlier today, we shared a first batch of pictures of Toyota's next compact crossover, which will rival the likes of the latest Honda CR-V, Ford Escape (Kuga in Europe) and Subaru Forester (just to mention a few of its competitors) on a global level.
 
The new RAV4 adopts the more modern and to some extent, sharper aesthetics from Toyota's latest models, such as the U.S. Camry and especially the European / JDM Auris series, with the interior design also following suite. 
 
There's nothing official yet from Toyota on the 2013 RAV4's specifications, and unless the Japanese carmaker decides to release the information early, we will have to wait until its world premiere at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show on Wednesday, November 28, to find out more.

More aggressive and more modern

The first pictures of the 2013 Toyota RAV4 have leaked to the web ahead of its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this week.

Looking more refined than its predecessor, the redesigned model has a sporty front fascia with an angular grille, distinctive headlights and a plastic lower insert. There's also a sloping roofline, a tailgate-mounted spoiler and wraparound taillights.

The interior is also revamped with a new dashboard that incorporates an infotainment system, secondary controls and a wave-shaped protrusion. We can also see a three-spoke steering wheel, metallic trim and circular air vents.

Engine options remain unconfirmed but choices could include a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 178 bhp (133 kW) and a 3.5-liter V6 with 268 bhp (200 kW). Both will likely be connected to a new six-speed automatic transmission which can be paired to an optional all-wheel drive system.

2013 Toyota RAV4 to Debut at L.A. Auto Show, Teaser Video Released

Not content to let Ford or Honda steal its compact crossover thunder with the new 2013 Escape and 2012 CR-V, Toyota has announced that the next-generation 2013 Toyota RAV4 will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month, and released a short teaser of the new RAV4.

As hinted by the RAV4s we’ve spotted testing and confirmed by Toyota’s new teaser video, Toyota’s next-generation compact crossover will feature styling similar to the 2012 Camry and 2013 Venza, with edgier lines, the new corporate grille, and headlights similar to those of the ever-popular Camry. At right and above are renderings of what the fully uncovered 2013 Toyota RAV4 could look like.

Inside the 2013 RAV4 is likely to get a slightly more upscale interior, with Toyota’s Entune infotainment system being a central focus of the cabin. Currently one of the only three-row vehicles in its class, there’s no word yet on whether the 2013 RAV4 will retain that feature as an option, though the Toyota’s teaser does show a profile that could seemingly fit an extra row of seats.

Under the hood, we’re expecting the 2013 RAV4 to use a revised version of its current 179-hp, 172-lb-ft 2.5-liter I-4, though its four-speed slushbox will likely be sent to the scrap heap in favor of the Camry’s six-speed auto. As we previously reported, the V-6 variant might not make it into the next-gen RAV4 lineup. If Toyota does decide to continue offering the compact crossover with a six-cylinder, the Camry’s 3.5-liter V-6 would be a likely candidate. The RAV4 Hybrid also remains a strong possibility.

The new 2013 Toyota RAV4 will make its public debut at the Los Angeles auto show on Wednesday, November 28. While Toyota has yet to official show the new crossover, an included teaser video gives us a few brief glimpses of the new model.

Even without the teaser video, we could guess at the basic design of the new Toyota RAV4 thanks to spy photos both from the U.S. and overseas. The 2013 Toyota RAV4 will adopt a more pointed, curved front end with the skinny chrome grille treatment seen on other new products like the 2012 Camry and 2013 Avalon. We’re told the front end has a three-level grille treatment like the Avalon, and that the silhouette looks very similar to the attractive new 2013 Ford Escape.

The Crossover may shrink a little bit, and we can probably expect a slightly sloped roofline exaggerated by skinny rear windows and a concave, C-shaped pillar. Compared to the current RAV4, expect the 2013 to wear more prominent bodyside creases and lines. On the inside, expect the dashboard to adopt the horizontal arrangement of cars like the new Camry, with bold analog gauges, big buttons, and some sort of optional touchscreen infotainment system.

According to Toyota, “The 2013 RAV4 is a new generation rewriting the rules of style, embodying sophistication and strength.” The car will follow the 2013 Avalon under Toyota’s new “Let’s Go Places” advertising tagline.

Our sources say the 2013 Toyota RAV4 will continue to be based on the Camry platform, but it will ditch its optional third row of seats and only accommodate five passengers — a move that brings the RAV4 more closely in line with its rivals, almost all of which are five-seaters. The 2.5-liter inline-four engine will continue as the standard engine, with the 3.5-liter V-6 most likely still available as an option. Speaking of which, expect the current RAV4′s four- and five-speed transmissions to be ditched in favor of a modern and more fuel efficient six-speed automatic.

Yes it's almost that time; like when your faithful old phone or television becomes out of date - your attention is then drawn to finding something newer, trendier, self-fulfilling enough to make the neighbors envious. 

Insert Toyota and its popular crossover here; the current RAV4 is fast growing a few grey hairs and has lost some of its youthfulness of yesteryear. Not wanting its direct competitors to seize on this, the boffins at Toyota have been working hard on its next generation of their popular compact SUV. 

This hard work has become more apparent in recent months with numerous camouflaged spy photos hitting the cyberspace. Based on those photos, I have created an illustration that previews the new design direction for the 2013 Toyota RAV4. 

 

Gone is the upright stance of old; replaced by a steeply raked cabin that looks to have been shaped by a wind tunnel stuck on hurricane setting. This sleekness has also transferred onto the sheet metal; there are now more contemporary creases and stylized lines - the outgoing model in comparison looks like it had too many deep-fried pies.

What you can't see here is the banishment of the tailgate mounted full-size spare; with it now being out of sight the tail-lights now span horizontally like the Camry's. 

At the business end, the grill and headlights take on the corporate look that will adorn the upcoming Corolla/Auris series. 

It may not be the most attractive nose, but does have an interesting chrome bar running from the headlights into the grill. There's even a hint of the Lexus 'spindle' grill in the front bumper, although some could argue that the designers had a fondness for pinched cheeks.

Overall the design is a much more contemporary effort; but one has to ask - is it enough to make the neighbors envious? It certainly has some strong opponents; with the latest generations of the Ford Escape / Kuga, Mazda CX-5, and Honda CRV being no duds in the beauty stakes. 

Regardless of where it sits in the style rankings, Toyota has always had a popular recipe with the RAV4, and one can bet they are not going to sabotage it by using dog meat.

What It Is: The next generation of Toyota’s RAV4 crossover. We’ve already spotted camouflaged prototypes during testing; this rendering incorporates many of the key changes expected for Toyota’s ubiquitous small SUV, including a more carlike look with smoother styling. 

Why It Matters: The RAV4 still is a hot item in Toyota showrooms, despite the current model being long in the tooth. It’s also growing out of step with the crossover mainstream (it still offers an old-school-SUV-style tailgate-mounted spare tire, for example), so this latest iteration needs to fall in line with the rest of the segment. That means a less-truckish appearance, as well as improved fuel economy. 

Platform: The next RAV4 should sit on a variation of the current model’s platform. But it will look like a new animal, thanks mostly to a smoother snout, a more steeply raked windshield, and the absence of an exterior-mounted spare tire. Our artist’s rendering applies Toyota’s latest design language to the shape of the prototype RAV4s we’ve seen. Basically, imagine a current-gen RAV4 mixed with the latest Camry sedan, and you’ve pretty much got it. Although this rendering speculates styling that’s something of a departure from that of the contemporary RAV4, it’s not too far off from what the European RAV4 has looked like for some time now. 

Powertrain: Buyers should again be able to spec their RAV4s with either front- or all-wheel drive, as is customary throughout the small-crossover arena. We expect the outgoing RAV4’s four- and six-cylinder engines to largely carry over to this new one; however, Toyota likely will upgrade to six-speed automatic transmissions for both engines. (Currently, the four-cylinder RAV4 gets an ancient four-speed auto and the brawny V-6 model gets a five-cog slushbox.) 

Competition: Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5. 

Estimated Arrival Time and Price: If this new RAV4 is to make the 2013-model-year cutoff, it’ll probably appear late this summer or in the fall; otherwise, it could debut sometime early next year as a 2014. Pricing shouldn’t budge much from the current RAV4’s base of $23,460. View Photo Gallery

Toyota was a pioneer in its segment with the first generation RAV4, which was considerably smaller than the SUV they currently build. This one was introduced in 2006 and suffered a facelift at the middle of its cycle in 2009.

So presumably, this brand new RAV4 is going to be on the market within the next year or so. This is first time we’ve been able to show you a prototype, and even though it’s heavily camouflaged, we can see it’s changed a lot.

It’s going to be better and more economical than the current generation, the reason being stiff competition coming its way from other Japanese rivals such as the Mazda CX-5 and the Honda CR-V.

The architecture for this car is believed to be derived from the current generation, seeing as the wheelbase seems unchanged.

We can also clearly see this car has done without the tailgate-mounted spare tire. Given where the number plate is installed and the shape of the bumper, it’s reasonable to deduce that this feature has been removed, and the spare is now in the trunk.

The styling of the 2013 RAV4 might differ from market to market, but it will be inspired by the Camry in the US.

Very Mitsubishi looking back end....

Toyota is working full throttle to develop a new generation of the RAV4, with the vehicle set to be shown by the end of the year, but we don’t have to wait in order to get an idea of what the designers are preparing, as a set of speculative renderings have appeared in the Italian magazine Quattroroute.

The renderings show that the fourth generation of the RAV4 will be a revolution in terms of design and will be positioned higher on the market, as it will borrow a few styling cues from Lexus (notice the CT200h headlamps?).

As for the tech side, various unofficial reports indicate that the engine range will follow the downsizing trend. For example, the V6 engine will be ditched in favor of the 2.5-liter that’s currently available. It is still unclear if Toyota will offer a hybrid version, due to the fact that the company is promoting the RAV4 electric vehicle, which has recently made its Californian debut.

Our say: we musn't forget that this is the car that basically invented the SUV segment, so its changes are very important, despite the fact that it might not set the trends anymore.

The Toyota RAV4 is due for a major update, having last been redesigned for the 2006 model year. Yes, it's gotten some tweaks since that time, but the compact crossover market is an ever-evolving place filled with tough competition from around the globe, and Toyota needs the RAV4 to maintain its hard-fought market share.

According to our spy photographers, the RAV4's next redesign is right around the corner. Judging from these photos, it would appear that Toyota is keeping its little 'ute to the confines of pavement – a wise decision, as vehicles of this ilk never venture very far off the beaten path. That said, the sharply angular lines of this new model's head and taillamps bring its styling more in line with the latest Camry and Avalon sedans while still putting its occupants over the heads of shorter machinery.

Rumors suggest that the 2013 RAV4 will enter production in the fall of '12, powered by a range of four-cylinder engines and possibly a hybrid. We'd be a bit surprised if the automaker's 3.5-liter V6 weren't available, as well. See the spy shots for yourself in our high-res image gallery above.
