An old Japanese nameplate
History Honda Civic is one of the oldest Japanese nameplates sold in Canada, having been launched here in 1972, and has been the best-selling car in this country for the past 13 years.
The 8th generation of the Japanese compact was marketed from 2006-11, until an all-new 2012 model came out this spring. Despite the popularity of hatchback models in Canada, Civic has been available only as a coupe or sedan since 2006, although a hybrid version also was available. The good stuff
With its rugged ACE body structure (which stands for Advanced Compatibility Engineering), the 8th generation Civic is one of the safest compacts and has earned 5-star ratings from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for both driver and passenger in frontal crash testing. Si models, available in both coupe and sedan form, have a potent 2.0-litre inline four making 197 hp. From 2006-11 Natural Resources Canada named Civic Hybrid as the most fuel-efficient compact sold here, with ratings of 4.3L/100 km highway and 4.7 city. Civic seats were once too thin and hard, but now are extremely comfortable - even on long trips.

Heads up!
2006-07 models, both coupes and sedans, suffered from an unusual number of recalls (for Honda), the most serious of which was a leak that could cause rear wheel bearing failure and which affected 107,653 cars. Something to be wary of in these times of high prices at the pump: the Si burns premium fuel. The 1999 and 2000 Civic Si has had the dubious distinction of being the most stolen car in Canada for several years running. This problem has been solved with the anti-theft engine immobilizer that is standard on 8th generation vehicles. The Si is a willing performer, but the 2.0-litre engine is a bit of a screamer when driven to its 8,000 rpm limit.

Overall
Except for the Hybrid, which is made in Japan, Civics sold in Canada are built at Honda’s Alliston, Ont. assembly plant and sold in several trim levels. The two-tier instrument panel was controversial at first and does take some getting used to. Fuel economy with the 1.8L gas engine won’t approach that of the Hybrid, but still will be in the range of 7.5L/100 km highway. As with all popular cars, used Civics sell at a premium - especially newer, low-mileage examples.

Honda Cars : Honda Civic retakes title of top selling car in Canada | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

The Honda Civic is once again the best-selling passenger car in Canada, according to statistics compiled by Dennis DesRosiers and Associates.

“It took a massive sales push in March with sales up 38.8 per cent, but the Civic has regained its decade-long position of being the best selling passenger car,” Dennis DesRosiers, Toronto-based auto analyst, said Thursday.

The Hyundai Elantra had displaced the Civic in January and February. The Ford F-series pickup truck remains the best-selling light truck and the best-selling vehicle overall.

With few exceptions, light trucks are selling very well this year thanks to “huge incentives as well a growing lack of supply of cars due to the impact of the Japanese earthquake,”

As well, the Detroit Three — whose strength lies with light trucks — are getting better at competing with import brands, said DesRosiers.

Despite rising gas prices, light trucks continue to outsell passenger cars, he added.

“Normally, sales of ‘B’ and ‘C’ vehicles go up with higher gas prices and vice versa.” said DesRosiers. “Year-to-date, we haven’t seen much evidence of this. Entry-level vehicle sales are up only 0.4 per cent in a market that is up by 2.1 per cent, so they are underperforming the market.”

The strongest segment all year so far have been those with vehicles dedicated to commercial use, like large pickup trucks and panel vans, he said. “Gas prices ultimately will change the types of vehicles bought by Canadians, but we are not seeing much evidence of it so far.”

Honda Cars : 2011 Honda Civic Type R Euro Launched in Japan, Limited to 1,500 Units | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

I don't know, maybe it's just me but, wouldn't this make more sense for a entry level Acura rather that the Civic rebadged CSX?!?....
Honda has introduced a new model year version of its British-built Civic Type R Euro in Japan. The 2011MY batch will be the last of this model series to make its way to Japan as production of the current generation three-door Civic Type R has been terminated in Europe because its 2.0-litre VTEC engine does not meet the Euro V emissions regulations.

The Japanese automaker had imported 1,850 examples of the Civic Type R Euro from Britain in late 2009. This time, Honda will bring a total of 1,500 units of the 2011MY version of its high-revving hot hatch. The only changes over the previous model year are the addition of a new Crystal Black Pearl color, some trim updates such as the different finish of the fuel cap and a new numbered plaque.

In Japan, prices for the 2011MY Civic Type R Euro start from 3,000,000 Yen [including consumption tax] or about US$37,200.

No Colour Changes from 2010 and the SE, which replaces the SPORT uses the same Black interior as the SPORT did.

No heated cloth seats on the SE trim like I thought they'd do, as far as I can tell, the SE has replaced the SPORT in name only.

Subtle changes upfront, but no major breakthrough for US/Asia version...

Size is suppose to shrink, maybe a tribute to the 4th generation model (1988-1991) which I think is perfect. Anything bigger, you might want to look at the Accord.

I just don't understand why every new generation model needs to get bigger???

Honda Cars : Honda Civic moved to archives on Honda Japan website – next generation coming soon? | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

There’s something very interesting happening over at Honda Japan’s website – the 8th generation Honda Civic have been removed from all the car line-up pages. The only reference to the Civic can now only be found under ‘Archives’ area. The page linked in the previous line lists the 8th generation as having a lifespan of 2007/09 to 2010/08! The Civic Hybrid based on the 8th generation car remains to be listed.

What does this mean? Only one thing – Honda is likely going to unveil the 9th generation Honda Civic very soon, since they’ve sort of ‘phased out’ the 8th generation non-hybrid sedan in Japan. Thanks to reader Calvin/lanarshad@8GCC for the tip!

Personally, I don't think so, I think the car is going to see changes that are "radically" different than this. I can't see them using the same body with a front end change, the front end is using a revised Acura shield which leads me to believe that this could be a Minor Model Change for the Acura CSX here in Canada....at the end of the day, only Honda really knows....
The design of Honda’s next generation Civic will not be radically different, according to reports.

Honda has taken longer than expected to bring out the new Civic, which has recently been overshadowed by the competition.

By the time Honda releases the new Civic (2012, we hear), Hyundai would have designed the Elantra twice. There have been no test mules of the booted Civic spotted anywhere in the world yet. This is a clear indication that the next generation Civic is still sometime away.

If this rendering is even close to the actual car, it looks far from stylish especially when compared to Hyundai’s utterly gorgeous Elantra. The current gen Civic doesn’t have a diesel engine in India and Honda has lost out on volumes due to this reason. Honda’s been regularly giving the Civic new features and recently even conducted a cosmetic surgery to keep it fresh. However, this will not work for very long.

Has Honda lost the plot by making the current generation Civic perfectly, preventing the design team from making it any better?

Only a few weeks after Honda President Takanobu Ito disclosed plans to equip the next generation of the Civic Hybrid with a new high-output and compact in size, lithium-ion battery, and our spies have captured a pair of test mules in the body of the current, European market Civic five-door hatch, testing near the company's R&D center in Offenbach, Germany.

According to our man with the long lens, the two prototype Civics "left the traffic lights in complete silence", which points to a full hybrid set up with the ability to run on electric power only.

The next generation of the Civic is due for release in 2011 or 2012 the latest. Aside from the hybrid model with gasoline-electric technology which could be offered in Europe in both hatchback and sedan forms, Honda has also confirmed the development of a smaller displacement turbo diesel engine that will fit right under the current 2.2-liter i-DTEC unit.

Nothing official from Honda Canada yet, but from a reliable source; all indications are that even though there won't be a major model change for 2011 like originally planned, the Honda Civic will get a SE (Special Edition) trim level for both the 2dr and the 4dr models. No word on what will be "Special", but I'm expecting something nice!

Honda may ditch the British-built Civic from the local range, but the factory's working on a replacement

Our spy photographers at Carparazzi have busted the next-generation Honda Civic testing in the Italian Alps.

The test mule shows the upcoming Civic shares many of the same futuristic styling cues as debuted on the current model, which was first launched back in 2005.

With a lineage stretching back to 1972, the Honda Civic is unarguably the brand's most readily recognised nameplate, and with looks like these, that brand recognition is certain to continue making a bold statement for a few more years yet.

Retaining similar dimensions to the existing model, the test mule appears to sport a wider track. The wheelbase remains unchanged.

A new bumper likely hides behind the protruding front bar, a fresh face likely to grace the new model.

Powertrain options will continue unchanged with the same mix of four-cylinder petrol and turbo-diesel offerings delivering outputs between 60 and 105kW. The current (85kW) 1.3-litre petrol-hybrid will also be carried over to the new model.

The new four-door Civic hatch is due to go on sale in Europe and the UK in late 2011 or early 2012. With exchange rates placing the British Civic at a disadvantage, there's a strong chance we won't see this car here, but Honda Australia is expected to continue offering the Thai-built Civic sedan variant.

There's no word yet on revisions to the white-hot Civic Type R.

We received this tip a while back but were asked to sit on it for reasons I won't get into, but here's what we got:

"Just heard through the grapevine that the next-gen civic will definitely be getting a version of the TSX K24. Probably for Si model. Will incorporate integrated exhaust manifold"

The integrated exhaust manifold the source is speaking of is the same sort of cast-in exhaust manifold that is currently found on Honda's J-series V6 engine family. It should be noted that the source has indicated that this rumor still has legs, yet it currently sits right around a 5 on our CR scale at this point.

In other 9th generation Civic news, American Honda Executive Vice President John Mendel recently confirmed something that we've been talking about here since last May (and more last September), and that's that the 8th generation cycle will be stretched by up to a year, pushing back the release of the 9th generation Civic. Mr. Mendel has only said that the next generation Civic would be released some time in 2011. For some time, we had been hearing that it would likely launch early in 2011. More recently some folks in the dealer community have pegged the intro date as June '11. If we start seeing 2011 Civics appearing in showrooms earlier than this September, then it would tend to support the notion that the 2012s would launch in the first half of 2011.

And finally, it's no secret that the Civic's delay was keyed by a midstream change during the design cycle. There were some reports from a blog or two that the redesign resulted in a vehicle that would be smaller than the current generation, but our understanding was that the original design of the 9th generation was going to be larger than the 8th generation, but then the redesign shrunk it back to the point where it was roughly equivalent in size to the current model. The latest from Automotive News lines up with this:

News, but not unexpected news, the current Civic is still extremely competitive....
We’re in dire need of a redesigned Civic (gotta admit, we're coming due....); however, according to John Mendel, American Honda Motor Co.’s executive vice president, the redesigned Honda Civic won’t arrive until 2011 (as a 2012 model of course). The schedule is well past the typical five-year product line for the compact car.

Mendel said that changing market conditions and tougher fuel-economy regulations have affected the development of the next-generation Honda Civic, which was originally scheduled to arrive this fall.

Mendel now says that the redesigned Civic will be unveiled sometime next-year, although he declined to give a specific timeline.

“In general, we are not changing cycles,” he said. “We change vehicles as need be. The ability to do something based on more current information is better than waiting a full model cycle. Some of that is being able to have the opportunity to change [based on] what you see happening in the marketplace.” (in other words, they don't want to just put something out to stay competitive, they want to make sure that they stay ahead of the pack....)

The Honda Civic sells about 1 million units a year globally, with the U.S. accounting for one-third of those sales.

The buzz is starting to get louder as information starts to see the light of day on North America's Honda Civic redesign.

The latest news is "....Tanai ordered his engineers and designers to scrap their plans and redesign the next-gen Civic to be smaller, cheaper, lighter and more fuel efficient." Hmm. Smaller. How much smaller do they mean? I think it's the right size already, but, what do I know.

Here's a chance for you to speak your mind by adding a comment towards what you think the Civic should change and add. The comments can be any information that you've heard to just dream ideas. Besides, who knows, maybe Honda's listening.

I'll Start Off;
-Bluetooth available in non-navi models (even if you have to add it as a installed accessory).
-XM Satellite radio in the same tune as above.
-Minimal increase in power, the 140hp is sufficient.
-Honda's gonna be deadly once they figure out that people (esp. us Canadians) love our heated seats, not just in leather!
-Integrate the adjustable headrests in the back seat to increase visability without having to remove the headrests.
-Keep the front end aerodynamic slope but add a Hood Edge Deflector option that is large enough for people to see where the front end is.

If you introduced an '80s-era Honda Civic to its modern counterpart, it couldn't recognize what it's become. But after decades of growing dimensions, Honda's going back to the drawing board for the next-gen Civic.

The change in direction was reportedly ordered last year before the global economy took a nose-dive by product chief Tsuneo Tanai who observed a rise in oil and raw metal prices. Once the financial sector hit rock bottom, the Civic emerged as a strong player, out-selling the Ford F-Series pickup as the number one vehicle in the United States in May 2008. Not satisfied with sitting back and seeing how things shape up, though, Tanai ordered his engineers and designers to scrap their plans and redesign the next-gen Civic to be smaller, cheaper, lighter and more fuel efficient.

The move coincides with Honda's re-strategizing vis-a-vis hybrids and electric vehicles, not to mention the cancellation of its V8 and rear-drive programs. But despite having put more people on the job, the decision to restart the Civic's development halfway through the process is sure to be a major setback for the company's lifecycle schedule. And not just for the Civic itself, but also for vehicles that share its platform, including the CR-V crossover (the CRV no longer shares the same platform, as of 2007), the Element sport-utility-box, the JDM Stream and European-market FR-V minivans, to say nothing of the upcoming CR-Z, Acura RDX, and of course the all-important Canadian-market Acura CSX.

Honda Cars : The Next Generation Honda Civic: My Take | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

There's been alot of talk about when the next generation Honda Civic is to come about, will it be a 2011 or a 2012 FMC? Regardless whether this 9th Generation Civic's official debut year, here are a few things suggestions that I think could be (and some that should) realistically done....

-Keep the size of the vehicle to where it is now, the roof line is good, great size trunk, and the flat rear floor really makes the rear seats spacious for almost anyone.

-Aerodynamics are good, but there's got to be a way to see that front hood, even just by a little bit, there are a few people that can't get past it.

-I haven't had any complaints with regards to power (fine line between more power and gas mileage), so I say hang onto the 1.8L but increase the hp to 148-150.

-Make Bluetooth standard on all trims. (Safety for Everyone....)

-Every generation of Civic has had some kind of unique change, be it the flat rear floor in the 01-05's, the heads up display in the 06-current, what are we going to do this time? I say, if there's a way to make the rear seats fold up like the FIT (yeah, I know the gas tank issue), that could go a long way to differentiate the vehicle from its competitors.

-Honda is going to be deadly once they figure out that people want heated seats (especially in the northern states and here in Canada!), 3 words - Cloth Heated Seats.

-Vehicle Stability Assist on all trim levels (fortifying the 'Safety for Everyone' slogan). The competitors are starting to use that one against us (even though I am not the biggest fan of this feature).

-XM Satellite Radio should be available.

-Navigation Systems should be available.

-The 5 speed Automatic Transmission is fine, please stay away from the CVT's. (google CVT reliablity issues....)

-Keep the heads up display, just update it.

-Have a performance upgrade kit (chip, intake, etc.) option for the Si model to go from (200-210hp range to the 240-250 range) regardless of price, people pay crazy money for the Mazda Speed and the Subaru WRX's....

-Power Seat available on the Leather models.

-Manual height adjustment on the passenger side (pipe dreamin' here....).

-Change tray on the left side of the steering wheel like in the 01-05's, not just some open square.

-Projector lenses on the front for upper models (or all). More upscale in appearance.

-Do not stray too far from the overall lines of the current model, it is a very good looking car (KIA seems to agree....ah, ah, ah-choo-Forte!!!!).

-Put a digital compass on the dash, much like the Accord's.

Anyway, that's all I can think of for now, if you have any ideas, please, put them down in the comments section - maybe Honda's listening!

Honda Cars : TOV: Next Generation Civic *Update* | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

Over the past few months, we have heard rumors coming out of Japan that the next generation Civic's introduction could possibly be delayed by as much as a year. Now we have heard some stuff coming from sources in the US that seem to support these earlier rumors.

First, I would like to emphasize that what we've heard comes from a source who A) is NOT a Honda associate, B) not in any way affiliated with any of Honda's competitors, and C) has provided reliable information in the past. With that said, this information definitely falls into the unsubstantiated RUMOR category, so take it at face value until we have a better feel for its validity.

The rumors suggest that there has been some internal debate concerning the scope of the 9th generation Civic redesign. This debate has taken place between the American team and their counterparts in Japan, and word has it that the American team wanted to take a significant step forward with the 9th generation Civic while the Japanese team was more interested in making incremental improvements. This difference in opinion is said to have resulted in several redesigns, which have delayed the development. There are prototypes said to be running around doing testing in the USA, but even if a spy were to snag shots of these prototypes, supposedly there is little chance that the finished product will look much like the prototype.

At this point, details are few, but we're hearing that the 9th generation Civic will be dimensionally very close to the current model (Hopefully that means it won't gain any weight). Power is said to be up by 5-8% across the board, with an increase in displacement from 1.8L to 2.0L (R20?) for standard Civics. The Si will reportedly end up with around 210-215hp.

Even if the car were on track for a model year 2011 introduction, with an autumn 2010 introduction (which is still entirely possible), it's pretty early to be hearing these sorts of details, so things are obviously subject to change.

Honda Cars : Automotive News: Acura to shift focus towards fuel efficiency, Honda may stretch product cycles | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

Mark Rechtin of Automotive News has two stories concerning Honda today. John Watts is (once again) a central figure in these stories. In the first story, Rechtin reports that Honda is looking at the possibility of stretching certain model cycles and quotes an analyst who says that the Accord would be a good possible candidate for an extended cycle, but it would be unlikely to see this happening to the Civic. Several months ago, we reported on tips we had received from anonymous sources claiming that the next generation Civic's introduction could be delayed by anywhere from 6 months to a year. Since then there have been several sources contradicting these claims, however. After reading the article at Automotive News, it's not really clear which direction Honda is really headed with this, as John Watts seems to make a number of arguments against the idea.

The second story concerns Acura and how they are said to be shifting their focus away from performance and more towards fuel efficiency. John Watts mentions that the upcoming 2016 CAFE standards are proving to be very difficult to meet (side note: Honda was one of the few automakers who supported the very stringent standards), and that they see a much stronger (luxury) consumer focus on fuel efficiency when the market emerges from the current recession.

According to the latest reports, the next-generation of the Honda Civic will be officially unveiled in 2010 and expected by the dealers in 2011. Like the current version, the new vehicle will be available in two versions, with 3 or 5 doors. The new generation will use petrol and diesel engines but will also offer a hybrid version, powered by a 1.5-liter petrol engine with 150 hp. Later, the Type-R version will come showing more than 200 hp.
