Honda Cars : Honda And BMW Installing Solar Panels At Auto Facilities | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

Honda and BMW are among the latest auto manufacturers to begin incorporating on-site solar electricity generation at some of their facilities.

Honda has been installing solar power generation systems at its operations in various locations around Japan, so far reaching a combined capacity of 3.3 megawatts.

Among the installations is a recently commissioned 9 kilowatt- solar power system at a Honda Cars Tokyo Chuo dealership. The installation marks the beginning of an initiative that will see over a hundred dealerships have similar solar panel arrays installed by March of 2014. The solar panels used are the company's own product - Honda Soltec CIGS thin-film solar cells. Honda Soltec is the company's solar component production and sales subsidiary.

Additionally, Honda says it will install a 2.6-megawatt Honda Soltec system at its new Yorii Plant, which the company says will be the largest solar power generation system installed at an automobile production facility in Japan.

BMW has also seen the light, having recently completed installing 400 solar modules, each with a 240 watt capacity, at BMW's Manufacturing's heritage museum and visitor's center situated alongside its South Carolina plant. The $500,000 solar power system provides all the electricity required to run the Zentrum Museum and will also be powering three new electric vehicle charging stations throughout the main facility.

"Adding a new, alternative energy platform to our energy portfolio is another step in our commitment to sustainable methods of generating power at our factory," said Duncan Seaman, Department Manager, Market Operations USA & Canada.

Mr. Seaman says the array complements BMW Manufacturing's existing landfill gas-to-energy and hydrogen fuel cell program, which offsets the fossil fuel requirements otherwise needed to run its facility.

Other auto manufacturers to harness solar energy to power some of their operations include Volkswagen, Renault, Ford and Toyota.

No more IMA lights?

Despite its more mild hybrid tendencies I’ve mostly been a fan of Honda’s hybrid cars. However, a number of battery-related problems in recent years have made me question Honda’s commitment to hybrids.

But, now that lithium will replace the sometimes shoddy NiMH battery packs in the upcoming 2012 Civic hybrid, it might be time to forgive and forget.

OK. For those now suffering or having suffered through Honda’s hybrid problems, there might never be forgiveness. Honda’s handling of some of the problems facing early Honda hybrid supporters has been appalling. Period.

Thinking forward, however, Honda is an important automaker and their hybrid vehicles have great meaning in the fuel economy debate. Consequently, some 2012 Honda Civic hybrid spyshots on InsideLine set up an obvious question: How much more fuel efficient will the new lithium-powered Civic hybrid be?

The spyshots show the new Civic hybrid being tested along with the Toyota Prius and the Honda Insight. Thus, its impossible not to wonder how close the new Civic hybrid will come to matching the fuel economy numbers of the Prius.

Without a larger battery pack, catching up to the Prius seems impossible. However, adding a larger battery pack, especially one made of lithium, also increases costs. Of course, no automaker made the kind of NiMH investment that did Toyota. So, maybe the cost difference between lithium and NiMH isn’t as extreme for Honda.

Anyway, greatly looking forward to the final Civic hybrid fuel economy numbers.

Honda has launched a new global purchasing policy to better track environmental impacts in their life cycles.

Online PR News – 18-January-2011 –Honda Motor Co will start evaluating its supplier’s environmental aspects under the newest revision of its Green Purchasing Guidelines, which lay out purchasing policies for the company to follow all around the world.

The Green Purchasing Guidelines were first developed in 2001, with the latest changes made to better track the carbon emissions and the environmental impacts of other products further back in their life cycles, beyond primary suppliers.

In addition to being evaluated on quality, cost, delivery and development, suppliers will also be evaluated in an environment category, which not only apply to suppliers in Japan. The Green Purchasing Guidelines are being applied to all parts and materials suppliers in the world.

While the Green Purchasing Guidelines previously were focused on managing environmental impacts during production, they are now intended to cover all corporate activities. And along with aimed at managing chemical use, they are also supposed to be used to improve Honda vehicle fuel efficiency.

The Honda Hybrid We've Been Waiting for

There's little doubt that Honda has a mixed record with hybrids. The original Civic Hybrid was well received, but its successor never achieved Prius-like mpg, while more recent entries like the Insight and CR-Z have garnered complaints for their dynamics and styling alike. However, with the launch of the new 2012 Honda Fit Hybrid in Japan, Honda may have at last found the right formula for green car success.

We get our turn behind the wheel of Honda's new eco warrior on the streets of Tokyo, but this car would make a lot of sense in the U.S., too. Cheaper and nicer to drive than the Insight — with all the space and practicality of the regular Fit — the Fit Hybrid exudes a sophisticated all-round feel. And it backs that all up with some pretty tidy fuel economy and CO2 emissions numbers.
Too bad, then, that Honda says the Fit Hybrid won't come to the U.S.

Simple Hybrid Solution
Already on sale in Japan (and slated for select European markets in early 2011), the subcompact 2012 Honda Fit Hybrid borrows the Insight's 1.3-liter IMA gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain. The Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system drives the hatchback's front wheels and stows its compact battery pack and power control unit neatly beneath the cargo floor. This packaging has allowed Honda to preserve the Fit's signature million-way-folding rear seats on the hybrid model.

Once again, it's a simple, efficient engineering solution from Honda, one that sees the Fit Hybrid turn in a high of 30 km per liter (equivalent to about 71 mpg) on Japan's generous 10.15-mode fuel cycle, coupled with CO2 emissions of just 77.4 g/km.

Not bad, but here's some perspective: The Toyota Prius is a heavier car with a larger-displacement 1.8-liter gas engine, yet it actually turns in the equivalent of 89 mpg under the same test conditions and earns an even cleaner emissions rating of 61 g/km. Ouch.
So, the Fit Hybrid isn't going to be the car that knocks the Prius off its perch — not with Honda's current level of IMA technology, at any rate. The hybrid conversion also adds about 220 pounds to the Fit, not to mention the equivalent of over $4,000 to its price tag.

Would you pay over $20,000 for a Fit Hybrid? The American side of Honda doesn't think so, at least not in great enough quantities to justify bringing it over.

More Refined Than the Insight
All these thoughts flash through your mind as you pull open the door and slide behind the wheel for the first time. The regular Honda Fit is already an excellent small car. Is the more highbrow hybrid model really worth it?

In cutthroat Tokyo traffic, the 2012 Honda Fit Hybrid is not without appeal. It feels sharp and lively. It steers well at speed. And it has the kind of body control and low NVH levels that you can only dream of in the Insight.

The basic platform architecture and front strut/rear torsion-beam suspension is the same on the Fit Hybrid and Insight, but Honda has resolved spring and damper rates far more successfully this time. The Fit Hybrid has a supple, well-controlled ride that wouldn't shame an Accord.

That said, the Honda Fit Hybrid is by no means a sporty car. Its electric-assist power steering is low on feedback as we round a corner in Tokyo's bustling Shibuya district. And, of course, if you push the little front-driver too hard, it understeers and feels soggy. Encouraging for a Honda, though, the hybrid Fit's brakes feel powerful, with a strong initial bite and an easily modulated pedal.

Respectably Quick
As on the Insight, the hybrid Fit's 1.3-liter gasoline four-cylinder develops 88 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 88 pound-feet of torque at 4,500 rpm. And as ever, the engine is peerlessly smooth, free-revving and well matched to Honda's continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The hatchback's small, front-drive electric motor is good for 13 hp at 1,500 rpm and 58 lb-ft of torque at 1,000 rpm. It lurks in the background, ever ready to provide an extra slug of power when needed or charge the nickel-metal hydride hybrid battery pack as required. Honda rates the IMA system's combined output at 98 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque.

The gas engine shuts down when you come to a halt to save fuel and emissions, but you still can't travel any meaningful distance in pure EV mode, as you can with the Prius. Then again, the Prius often feels numb, even sterile, while the Honda Fit Hybrid drives pretty much like a conventional car.

Honda won't offer up a 0-60-mph estimate, but the Fit feels respectably quick, helped along by useful low-range torque courtesy of the electric motor.

If you're feeling pious, you can press the green Eco button, which softens throttle response, amps up the regenerative braking and reduces air-conditioner oomph to promote more fuel-efficient driving. As you drive, there's a small hybrid flow meter in front of you, showing the direction of the current and, as in the Insight, the speedometer groovily changes color (blue to green) to match your eco driving.

Even using Eco mode, we don't get anywhere near that carefully orchestrated 70.6-mpg test bed figure during our tour of Tokyo. Still, if this hatchback comes to the U.S. as the 2012 Honda Fit Hybrid, we expect it to do much better than the current gasoline Fit's ho-hum 28 city/35 highway mpg rating.

We Want a 2012 Fit Hybrid
Honda has been wily with its pricing strategy for the Fit Hybrid in Japan. The hybrid Fit starts at 1.6 million yen, which by today's exchange rates, comes out to the equivalent of $19,500. In contrast, the third-generation Prius costs Japanese customers 2.1 million yen (about $25,000), while Honda's own Insight runs you 1.9 million (about $23,000). You shouldn't read too much into those prices, but they give you an idea how 2012 Honda Fit Hybrid prices might shape out in the United States.

The risk, of course, is that Honda might cannibalize its own sales with this new, value-priced Fit Hybrid — both in Japan and the U.S. The automaker already has three hybrids in this price territory, and the trump card, a Civic Hybrid reportedly capable of beating the Prius in the mpg race, is headed our way in late 2011.

We're not sure how much room this leaves for a U.S.-spec 2012 Honda Fit Hybrid. What we do know is that Honda has delivered on a cool, effective new hybrid with a lot more utility than either the Insight or CR-Z. As far as we're concerned, it's Honda's most appealing hybrid to date.

There are more ways than just making enviro cars to be environmentally friendly....

MANILA, Philippines—Recognizing that vehicles are big contributors to pollution, Honda Cars Philippines Inc. is stepping up efforts to reduce its own carbon footprint by implementing various environment-saving measures in its Sta. Rosa, Laguna manufacturing facility.

In a speech during the celebration of the company's 20th anniversary, Honda Philippines president and general manager Hiroshi Shimizu said that from 2006, the car manufacturer had slashed carbon emissions from its production activities by as much as 20 percent.

This was achieved through the implementation of energy demand side management activities, as well as energy efficiency and conservation measures, including the conduct of energy audits
and the installation of energy-efficient equipment and lighting systems.

Shimizu related that the company has also embarked on a waste reduction program that aimed to eliminate manufacturing-related wastes by next year.

Efforts directed at achieving this goal included the reduction and segregation of various waste products, the use of recyclable packaging for the parts that it exports, and the treatment of its hazardous waste materials through cement kiln technology.

Honda Motor Co., the car maker's Japanese parent, is constantly conducting research on automotive technologies that will reduce carbon emissions.

Michio Shinohara, general manager of Honda's environment and safety planning office, said the company was working hard to accelerate the rollout of vehicle models using electromotive technologies.

"The shift to electromotive technologies is one of the most effective ways to reduce carbon emissions,'' he said.

Honda earlier in the year launched a real-world demonstration program of its electric motorcycles and automobiles, in cooperation with Japan's Kumamoto and Saitama prefectures.

These personal mobility products, powered by electromotive technology, were used in a mainstream urban setting to determine the effectiveness of such vehicles under normal driving conditions and to study how the future urban transportation system should be designed to provide the most improvement to overall quality of life.

Honda also sells hybrid vehicles in other markets, but is not inclined to do so until after 2013, when the tariff on such vehicles go down to zero under the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement.

NEW SPY PHOTOS obtained today reveal that development of the upcoming 2012 Honda Jazz Hybrid continues apace.

Joining the new CR-Z and Insight hybrids, the Jazz Hybrid - to be sold overseas as the Fit Hybrid - is expected to use a powertrain based on the Insight's 1.3 litre petrol engine and 10kW electric motor.

With the Jazz already a frugal car, achieving 6.4 l/100km, success will perhaps lie in the lower development and production cost of Honda’s hybrid systems compared to other manufacturers.

If these new spy photos are anything to go by, the styling of the Jazz Hybrid is unlikely to differ greatly from the regular petrol-powered model, the most likely changes to be to the grille and bumpers.

Honda Spokesperson Akemi Ando told Japan's Nikkei last year that the manufacturer does not yet have a specific launch date or price for the Jazz hybrid, but the newspaper estimates Honda’s diminutive hybrid will sell for around AU$20,000 in Japan.

The Fit Hybrid will be the third of three new Honda mild hybrid models that join the long-running Civic Hybrid, now in its seventh model year.

The 2012 Fit Hybrid will presumably use a powertrain similar to that of the 2010 Honda Insight, which includes a 1.3-liter engine and a 10-kilowatt electric motor.

Sales of the 2010 Honda Insight subcompact hybrid have been a disappointment, perhaps because at a base price of $19,800 before delivery, it costs $5,000 more than the 2010 Fit, which has more room inside and a more versatile interior.

Last year, Honda sold a total of 15,119 Civic Hybrids and 20,572 Insights in the U.S. market. That was less than half the number of Insights it hoped to sell, indicating that buyers may not see the Insight as a notable improvement over the Fit.

After the Insight comes the 2011 Honda CR-Z, a sporty hybrid two-seater that uses a larger 1.5-liter motor for better performance.

The CR-Z's stated performance isn't stellar, with 0 to 60 mph times of 9.7 seconds, and projected fuel economy ratings of 36 mpg city, 38 mpg highway with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The Fit Hybrid follows the CR-Z, as either a 2011 or 2012 model, though whether it makes it to the U.S. is another question.

The 2010 Honda Fit is a low-priced car in the States, whereas it's sold as a family vehicle in some Asian and European regions.

Several weeks ago, Honda executives said the value proposition for the Fit Hybrid would be a challenge. Perhaps it would do better in its home market, where the CR-Z is already smashing sales projections.

Honda used to sell a wonderful little pocket rocket called the CR-X, a sporty version of the Civic that to this day still has a core following. These owners are active in clubs, sharing parts, performance tuning tips and all sorts of stories and experiences.

The CR-X was really Honda's halo car from the early 1980s to the early 1990s. And then wham! No more. Honda apparently grew up and put its toy car away. Some argue that was a colossal blunder.

But by global car company standards, Honda is a relative pipsqueak – its sales volumes are just more than a third of Toyota's. So with the SUV and minivan boom of the 1990s, the fun-to-drive little CR-X gave way to Honda Odyssey minivans and, later, Pilot SUVs, Ridgeline pickups and bigger Accords and Civics.

Well, Honda says it is back-to-the-future time. The 21st century incarnation of the CR-X is coming this summer as a two-seater hybrid, and we saw the production version of it in January at the Detroit auto show. It's called the CR-Z and it appears to be part of a back-to-basics movement at Honda.

Back to basics not in terms of technology – we are talking about a hybrid, after all – but in terms of Honda's focus on small, fuel-efficient cars. There is, indeed, an updated version of the Odyssey also coming this year, but it's not going to play the same pivotal role in Honda's lineup that it once did. Minivans, as we all know, have become somewhat passé.

But small cars? That's Honda.

“We can make money on small cars because that's our business,” says Jerry Chenkin, executive vice-president of Honda Canada.

The fact is, despite the global recession and the dramatic slump in new car sales everywhere but China, Honda has suffered less than most. The key is a lineup of fuel-efficient cars and flexible factories that can shift quickly to meet changes in consumer demand. Honda was one of the few Japanese auto makers to end 2008 in the black and is one of the fewer still predicting a profit in its current fiscal year, which ends March 31.

“We are profitable and we're going to stay that way,” says Chenkin. “We are not chasing volume at the expense of profits,” he adds, taking a subtle but direct swipe at Toyota, whose quest to become the world's No. 1 auto maker is at the root of its problems today.

The CR-Z is designed to tap into memories of the CR-X, but it is more than that. It joins the Insight and Civic as the third hybrid option in the Honda lineup. So far, Honda has had little luck selling hybrids in great numbers or for healthy profits. But Chenkin thinks the sporty CR-Z will be different.

It's not intended to be a high-volume car, like the Insight. So even though the price is expected to be in the mid-$20,000s or higher, Honda expects to attract a smallish but loyal and dedicated following – buyers willing to pay a modest premium for what is arguably the world's first affordable sporty hybrid in mass production. Honda is shooting for annual sales of 10,000 CR-Zs.
Moreover, Honda officials hint that future hybrid models will be unveiled at upcoming auto shows in Chicago and New York. If Honda has one trait as a company, it is stubbornness, and that means Honda will not give up on its hybrid strategy despite disappointing Insight sales in Canada and the United States.

The gasoline-electric hybrid CR-Z generates 122 horsepower with fuel economy estimated at 6.5 litres/100 km in the city and 6.2 on the highway. It can be driven in one of three modes – “sport,” “normal” and “econ.” Using a 1.5-litre gas engine (basically the same one in the Fit hatchback) and a less-powerful version of the electric motor in the Insight and Civic hybrids, the CR-Z should be able to hit 100 km/h from a stop in less than 10 seconds.

And there's more. In Detroit, Honda Motor chief executive officer Takanobu Ito said he has challenged his research and development staff to develop a hybrid that exceeds the fuel economy of the Toyota Prius hybrid.

“We want to develop and expand our hybrids,” Ito, 56, said during an interview with The Detroit Free Press. “We made some major sacrifices to shift people and resources to do that.”
Honda, it's reported, is now ready to expand its small-vehicle hybrid system to other platforms. However, Honda's large-vehicle hybrid platform is not ready.

All these moves are designed to put Honda back on track with its roots, after years of investing in big vehicles such as the Pilot. Indeed, even Honda's bread-and-butter offerings, the Accord mid-size car and the Civic compact, have grown bigger and bigger, year after year.

The result is that after decades of claiming the best overall fuel economy – fleet-wide fuel economy – Honda is now facing a particularly fierce fuel-efficiency challenge from Hyundai.
South Korea's largest car maker, said in December that it bested Honda in 2009 model year fuel economy, citing U.S. Environmental Protection Agency data. Figures on the U.S. agency's website put Hyundai models at 30.1 mpg in 2009 versus 29.7 mpg for Honda. In Canada, Hyundai is scrambling to somehow use this claim in its marketing, but this is problematic in that Natural Resources Canada does not provide similar EPA fleet-wide comparison data.

But in the United States, officials say they can see that Hyundai has thrown down the gauntlet. The push at Honda now is to reclaim its title as most fuel-efficient auto maker. This matters. Car companies see fuel efficiency, low emissions and advanced powertrains as competitive tools to attract 21st century buyers.

There is also the small matter of stricter fuel-economy rules coming into force. By 2016, car companies in both Canada and the United States will need to be selling fleets that average, overall, 6.7 litres/100 km or 35 mpg.

In all this, of course, Hyundai is certainly not the only auto maker posing a challenge to Honda. Toyota has plenty of fuel-efficient offerings and plans to expand its hybrid lineup, too. Ford and GM are also moving into alternative powertrains – hybrids and electric vehicles – while also pushing ahead with more efficient traditional engines.

Some, such as Eric Noble, president of the Car Lab consulting firm, think it might be too late for Honda to reclaim the “green halo.”

“It's been three generations of Prius and dozens of announcements from competitors,” he said in Detroit.

Ito was undeterred.

“Of course we want the most efficient engines,” Ito told reporters. “Competitors are catching up and I feel pressure from this. I don't want to lose out.”

Yet even while Honda is working on hybrids and various cleaner and more fuel efficient technologies, the Tokyo-based company – the world's largest engine maker – has also been pushing hard to advance hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.

Only last week, Honda unveiled its next-generation solar hydrogen station prototype in Los Angeles. This station is ultimately intended for home use, to refuel hydrogen fuel cell vehicles over night.

Honda already has leased five of its emission-free FCX Clarity fuel-cell cars in the U.S. in each of the past two years. Canadian Olympic hockey captain Scott Niedermayer is one of the lessees.
As Honda pushes ahead with new products and new technologies, looming in the background is a variable completely out of all auto makers' control: currency valuations. Over the last year, the Japanese yen has grown stronger as the U.S. dollar has weakened. In fact, while the yen is currently trading in the ¥90-to-the-dollar range, it has been as strong as ¥80 to the dollar.

Therefore, it's tough to make money exporting cars from Japan. In Canada, more than 90 per cent of Honda's sales volume is built in North America, so the company is largely insulated from exchange rates. But the subcompact Fit is not only imported from Japan, it is subject to a 6.1-per-cent tariff, making it impossible to price the Fit as low as Honda Canada would like. Fit production is almost assuredly coming to North America.

But in an interview with trade journal Automotive News, Ito warned that certain advanced technologies must at least for now be exported from Japan and that will make them pricier than Honda would really like – at least here in Canada and the United States. The hybrid unit in the Civic, Insight and CR-Z is made in Japan and the hybrid system Honda is developing for large models will also be exported from Japan.

Honda is also struggling to maintain its product development budgets while turning a profit and maintaining its schedule for updating models. Ito concedes that the development team of the next world Civic has shifted its focus to enhance fuel economy even more than originally planned, while also improving performance.

The Civic team is “struggling” to do that, and also to cut costs to make its models “more profitable,” he says.

Honda insiders, in fact, say they are anxious to introduce a new model that is a clear-cut grand slam hit in the marketplace. Honda's lineup is strong enough, but a truly “wow” car would do wonders.

More than a few Honda types are holding their breath, hoping the CR-Z is it.

The familiar sound of cars failing to start in the cold weather is set to become a thing of the past after scientists developed lasers which can be used to replace spark plugs in petrol engines.

Scientists at Liverpool University and engineers at car giants Ford have developed a new ignition system which uses focused beams of laser light to ignite the fuel.

The researchers claim the technology is more reliable and efficient than current spark plug technology and will enable cars to start more easily in cold and damp conditions.
It is understood that Ford, the world's fourth largest car manufacturer, hopes to put the laser ignition system into their top of the range vehicles within the next couple of years before making it more widely available.

Dr Tom Shenton, a reader in engineering at Liverpool University who is leading the project, said: "We are running engines everyday in our laboratory with this system now and our ultimate objective is have it inside cars driven by consumers.

"Lasers can be focused and split into multiple beams to give multiple ignition points, which means it can give a far better chance of ignition.

"This can really improve the performance of the engine when it is cold, as this is the time when around 80 per cent of the exhaust emissions are produced and the engine is at is least efficient.
"The laser also produces more stable combustion so you need to put less fuel into the cylinder."
In current engines spark plugs are positioned at the top or bottom of a cylinder and they can often fail to ignite fuel effectively if the petrol is not in the right position in the cylinder.

In the new system the spark plug is replaced by a laser powered by the car battery which is sent along thin optical fibres into the engine's cylinders where lenses focus the beam into an intense pinprick of light.

When fuel is injected into the engine, the laser is fired, producing enough heat to ignite the fuel and power the engine.

The researchers claim that the laser, which will need to fire more than 50 times per second to produce 3000 RPM, will require less power than traditional spark plugs.

Some of the laser can be reflected back from inside the cylinder to provide information for the car on the type of fuel being used and the level of ignition, allowing the car to adjust the quantities of air and fuel automatically to optimise the performance.

This raises the prospect of mixed fuel cars which can run on a number of different biofuels while ensuring they still run efficiently.

A spokesman for Ford said: "Ford, like all vehicle manufacturers, is obliged by European legislation to reduce emissions and our work in this area is led by Ford's UK R&D centre in Essex.
"This collaboration with the University of Liverpool is part of that effort, with Ford contributing in kind, with engineering time and equipment use, as well as financially."

The project has now been awarded a £200,000 grant by the Carbon Trust to help develop the system further. Transport accounts for 25 per cent of carbon emissions and it is hoped new ignition systems can help to cut this level of pollution.

Robert Trezona, Head of Research & Development at the Carbon Trust, said: "Laser ignition is attractive in a number of ways.

"It has a real potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the future by improving the ignition and combustion of fuel, particularly in engines starting from cold, but it can also be used in mixed fuel engines such as biofuels."
