Honda is heralding the arrival of its U.S. market icon, the 2013 Civic, unveiled at the Los Angeles auto show last fall. The campaign, via long-time agency RPA, comprises four TV spots, one of which debuted in the Rose Bowl on Tuesday. The new ads have "found" video content to talk about entrepreneurial spirit of inventors and Honda’s engineers. There are more than 10 different inventors portrayed in the spots.

The effort, which also has print and digital elements, mixes product messages with the company's corporate mantra around innovation and continuous improvement (the Japanese philosophy of Keiretsu). Three of the TV spots are for the Civic Sedan, Si Coupe and Hybrid, respectively, and a 60-second spot, which aired during the Rose Bowl, features all three of the vehicles.

Ads show both ersatz and commercial innovations (the Brompton folding bike, the laser keyboard, the 4moms origami stroller) are paired with Honda's own corporate content that tout the 2013 Civic, and the Honda racing program, but also Honda's ASIMO robot, and the manufacturer's foray into the wild blue yonder with HondaJet. 

“We wanted to not only showcase Honda's latest example of [its innovation philosophy], but embrace the other...dreamers and doers out there who share our way of thinking," said Jason Sperling, SVP, group creative director at the agency, who adds that the campaign is a kind of innovators "group hug.”

Ellen Kuras, who was behind the lens for films like “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Blow,” is director of photography, and the ads are set to the music of Santigold.

The agency says the new ads will air during primetime rotation on ABC, CW, Fox, NBC, cable and during NBA and NFL AFC Wildcard and Divisional games, as well as in nearly 60 markets during the BCS Championship.

Honda is also going with spot buys during the broadcast of the Grammy Awards on Feb. 10 on CBS. The company will air the 30-second ads in its 60 top markets during the show, and Honda will run a gatefold print ad in “Entertainment Weekly” and a YouTube masthead takeover is scheduled the day after the show.

Not least is a social media vector to get people talking about the cars and the innovations featured in the ads on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram to help create buzz and curiosity around the innovations and the new Civic.

Print will run in  ESPN The Magazine, Elle, Food Network Magazine, InStyle, GQ and People. Online ads include home-page takeovers on Yahoo and MSN, full-episode streaming and within “March Madness on Demand” and “NFL Everywhere.”

Either Honda or its marketing agency find the Holiday red-bow intolerable for the new Honda Accord ad. Patrick Warburton, who plays the spokesman in Happy Honda Days Television ad, knocks the red bow off a Honda concluding that potential Honda customers don't need it unless they are millionaires who can give a car as a gift to a loved one.

"Are you a millionaire? No? Well then you probably don't give cars to people as presents," says Warburton (see the video of the ad below), who is a known voice in the commercial and advertising world.

The message may well resonate with the Occupy Wall Street protesters, who call themselves the 99ers. These are people who may not give cars as presents, but may need one for themselves. Thus, neither they nor the Honda marketers need the red bow used by Lexus marketers.

Honda Accord is the highest ranked midsize car in JD Power's 2011 Initial Quality Study. In this category it's the only car and the award recipient which which got the highest ranking in overall quality, powertrain quality, body and interior quality as well as in features & accessories quality categories.

Honda has released new information about the 2012 Civic (Euro-spec).

Designed for maximum efficiency, the car has an aerodynamic shape with a lower front fascia, streamlined mirrors and drag-optimized taillights. Compared to the previous model, the car is 10mm wider and 20mm lower. This gives the vehicle an aggressive stance which can be augmented by 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the cabin is outfitted with 'soft touch' plastics, a redesigned steering wheel and a touchscreen infotainment system. Other highlights include Bluetooth connectivity, additional sound deadening material and a boot that holds 401 liters (14.2 cubic feet) of luggage.

Under the hood, three engines are available. The 1.4-liter i-VTEC produces 100 PS (73 kW / 98 hp) and 127 Nm (94 lb-ft) of torque. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes 13.4 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 187 km/h (116 mph). While it won't win any races, the car averages 5.4 L/100km (52.3 mpg imp) with CO2 emissions of 129 g/km.

For added performance, the 1.8-liter i-VTEC develops 142 PS (104 kW / 139 hp) and 174 Nm (128 lb-ft) of torque. It allows the car to run from 0-100 km/h in 9.1 seconds and hit a top speed of 215 km/h (134 mph). In terms of efficiency, owners can expect to average 5.8 L/100km (48.7 mpg imp) with CO2 emissions of 137 g/km.

Lastly, the 2.2-liter i-DTEC diesel has 150 PS (110 kW / 148 hp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. With this engine, the dash to 100 km/h takes 8.5 seconds and the top speed is 217 km/h (135 mph). Despite being the fastest model available, the car is relatively fugal as it consumes 4.2 L/100km (67.2 mpg imp) while emitting 110 g/km.

The minds at Raging Artists are typically tasked with producing unique marketing spots for a variety of companies. The crew recently applied their creative minds to the world of minivans, and designed a spot they feel helps put the people mover in a light that appeals to the fathers of the world.

A dad is given orders to take the kids to school, and the family's Honda Odyssey to the car wash. Honda didn't commission the piece, but the Odyssey is clearly the star of this show. It's used to shuttle the father through a variety of tasks, only two of which were actually part of his original wife-mandated marching orders.

I will use any excuse to post this picture....
Instead of cranking out a few more commercials, Honda is taking a different approach. It's making short films about some pretty interesting, and varied, topics.

The one about robots is especially well done. It's basic message: Robots are here to help us, says the company that brought you Asimo, pictured above. We have nothing to fear. There. If robots take over the world, blame Honda.

The goal of the films, a far longer format than any ad, was "telling the story we are already telling within the walls of Honda," said Barbara Ponce, Honda's U.S. ad chief. Doing it through short films works because "there wasn't enough time to tell the story and it wasn't breaking through in the 30-second spots."
