That the U.S. market is an important one for Honda is no surprise; neither is the fact that American Honda developers and engineers are playing a bigger role in engineering the cars the company sells. But Honda is playing a game of musical chairs at Honda North American Regional Operations to further boost American Honda’s share of the work.

Honda announced this morning that Tetsuo Iwamura’s job is growing. Currently the President of Honda North America, the COO of North American Regional Operations, and the President/CEO of American Honda Motor Company, he now adds COO of Automotive Operations and risk management officer for Honda Motor Co. to his list of responsibilities. That’s a lot of buzzwords and titles, but it all boils down to this: the man running American Honda operations will now head Honda’s international automotive operations.

Beneath Iwamura, Hidenobu Iwata will head a new company called Honda North America Services, LLC. HNAS will be headquartered in Marysville, Ohio (near Honda’s manufacturing plant) and will “provide common support functions and streamline coordination of R&D.” Again, a lot of buzzwords, but it seems to signal Honda’s commitment to putting American research and development at a higher level. Elsewhere around Honda’s North American operations, the executive vice president of Honda Canada Inc, Jerry Chenkin, will be promoted to CEO of Honda Canada.

The moves aren’t very big on paper, but if you give them a little bit of context it appears that Honda is shifting many of its research and development efforts away from Japan and to the United States. We already know that the next Civic will be designed and engineered here (in hopes of avoiding the 2012 model’s lackluster reviews), and Honda’s automotive crown jewel, the Acura NSX project, is taking shape in Ohio as you read this.

TOKYO (Nikkei) -- Honda Motor Co. (7267.TO, HMC) is shifting development of its next-generation Civic and Accord models to the U.S. to speed up the release of vehicles suited to local tastes, the Nikkei reports in its Nov. 26 edition. 

U.S. subsidiary Honda R&D Americas Inc. is overseeing the next Civic model due to hit the market around 2016 at a facility in Ohio, the Nikkei said. U.S. engineers will design the body and interior and select parts. They are also entrusted with setting up mass-production facilities. 

The U.S. unit will soon start development of the next-generation Accord as well. 

Civics and Accords account for one-third of Honda's global sales, or around 500,000 to 600,000 units apiece annually. Around half of the vehicles are sold in North America, a market that generates 40% of the auto maker's consolidated operating profit. 

Subsidiary Honda R&D Co.'s facilities in Tochigi Prefecture have traditionally handled development, with roughly 9,000 specialists assigned to design new vehicles bound for global markets. 

With the domestic market trending toward smaller cars, however, Honda's best-selling vehicles in Japan are now the Fit subcompact and minicars, while annual Civic and Accord sales have diminished to several thousand units. 

It therefore makes less sense to develop those vehicles in Japan. Honda employs roughly 2,000 engineers in North America, including 200 or so dispatched from Japan. With these specialists having gained expertise in vehicles sold in the North American market, Honda believes the time is right to have them oversee development of the sedans. 

Honda spends roughly 500 billion yen a year on R&D. From now on, development of vehicles bound for overseas markets will be scaled back at the domestic research base, which will focus on next-generation technology such as a fuel-cell-powered vehicle due out as early as 2015.

Honda, who exited F1 in 2008, could yet return to F1 but only if rule changes prove to be attractive.

The Japanese manufacturer withdrew from the sport at the end of a dismal 2008 season, selling their F1 team to Ross Brawn.

Brawn GP, as the team was known, had immediate success, winning the 2009 Drivers' and Constructors' Championship.

However, Honda's withdrawal may not be permanent as Yoshiharu Yamamoto, the head of Honda R&D, says the door is never completely closed.

"On a personal level I love racing, but there is a lot involved when you are in F1 - it is the very top of auto racing and that requires a large commitment," Yoshiharu Yamamoto told Autocar.

"But it is true that we do look up at those races and hope that one day we can take part again.

"I do not personally think we can just go straight back immediately, but there is potential for the rules to change and attract us.

"I follow the rules, certainly, and if they present an opportunity then it would be nice to go back."
Yamamoto, though, was quick to point out that this was his "personal view - not that of Honda - but I feel the first thing we must do is win in the WTCC, and then perhaps we can look further afield."

Honda has announced the introduction of a new direct-injection turbocharged 1.6 litre mill to be plonked into a Civic, but don’t get too excited – the engine is a racing unit meant for the Civic taking part in the FIA World Touring Car Championship.

The HR412E, as it’s called, is a completely bespoke unit fully conforming to FIA regulations for the WTCC. Developed at Honda’s R&D centre in Tochigi, Japan, the engine has been delivered to the Honda Racing Team JAS workshop in Milan, Italy, where the Civic WTCC is being developed.

“The HR412E heralds a new generation of high performance racing engines from Honda. We believe the innovations that have led to this revolutionary engine will also lead to benefits beyond the race track, helping us to further increase the efficiency of our road car engines,” said Daisuke Horiuchi, WTCC Development Project Leader at Honda R&D.

Whether this will translate into turbocharging making its way into the company’s road-going cars like the supposed new Type R hatch being bandied about remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, the Civic WTCC is set to take part in three races this season, with ex-F1 driver Tiago Monteiro behind the wheel, starting at Suzuka in October. Honda is set to compete in the full FIA World Touring Car Championship in 2013.

Honda plans to post its second-highest ranking global executive in the U.S. for the first time as the automaker that was Japan’s first to build cars in the market extends a three-decade localization push.

Tetsuo Iwamura, 60, Honda’s chief operating officer for North America, on April 1 adds the titles of executive vice president and executive officer, the Tokyo-based company said today in a statement. Iwamura is to also join Honda’s board in late June, pending shareholder approval, the company said.

Iwamura will continue to run operations in North America while assisting President Takanobu Ito in managing global sales, said Jun Odajima, a company spokesman. “This is the first time the top North American executive has also been the No. 2 company official,” he said.

The promotion of Iwamura and naming of Erik Berkman to lead Honda’s U.S. research and development unit, the first time that job has gone to a non-Japanese engineer, come as the company lifts production across North America, its biggest source of revenue, to counter a rising yen. Honda is increasing vehicle output at plants in the U.S. and Canada, adding a factory in Mexico to build subcompacts and preparing to make the Acura NSX supercar in Ohio by 2014.

Berkman, currently vice president of corporate planning and logistics for U.S. auto operations, is to become president of Honda R&D Americas on April 1, the company said.

Honda’s U.S. headquarters are in Torrance, California. The company’s American depositary receipts rose 1.3 percent to $37.28 at the close in New York.

Although Honda built its reputation in engineering and innovation, in recent years it has strayed from that path – there have been no new engines, transmissions, hybrid, electric or plug-in systems in an era when the competition is bombarding us with new thinking.

Honda Motor president and CEO Takanobu Ito admits the company has had trouble. “The real challenge facing car companies around the world is the speed at which change is taking place. To be honest, we have not been able to keep up as well as we’d like.”

He also heads up Honda R&D and in that role says his first task as president is to push for advanced technologies, advances that will put Honda ahead of the pack in the fields of batteries, hybrids and fuel cells while working on further efficiencies with the internal combustion engine. “We’re hard at work on all of these at once,” he said recently.

The previous day, at the company’s R&D centre in Motegi, 125 km north of Tokyo near the area decimated by the March earthquake and tsunami, we had sampled a steady stream of new innovations that will find their way into an array of new vehicles in the next couple of years.

We drove a variety of new and future vehicles powered by a completely new family of four- and six-cylinder engines. We tried several new transmissions, a truly innovative all-wheel-drive system, various hybrids including one without a transmission, pure electric vehicles and a sleek sedan powered by a fuel cell.

On the engine front, a unique combination of variable valve-timing, twin camshafts and direct injection has been developed allowing engines to run on the fuel-savings Atkinson Cycle without the loss of power or torque previously associated with that method. These include a quartet of new four-cylinder gasoline engines ranging in displacement from 1.0 to 2.4 litres and a new 3.5-litre V6. The new 2.4-litre will first appear in the next Accord, late in 2012, and perhaps the new CR-V shortly afterward.

We drove vehicles powered by a new 148-horsepower, 1.8-litre four that would be right at home in a mid-cycle version of the new Civic being readied for the 2013 model year and a 127-horsepower, 1.5-litre four destined for the Fit. In all cases, these preliminary power figures are on the conservative side but considerably higher than current engines of similar displacement, while consuming 10 per cent less fuel. We also sampled a Civic powered by a potent little 1.6-litre turbo diesel.

Honda engineers have developed a trio of new continuously variable transmissions for small and mid-sized cars. On road and track they exhibited less of the “motor-boating” and “rubber-band” effects associated with CVT transmissions. Only when pressed hard on the track did they assume the CVT propensity to sound like a clutch was slipping.

Honda has also come up with a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox for higher power applications.
All of these engines and transmission will appear in standalone or hybrid applications across a wide range of vehicles of all sizes and shapes in the next two years.

Honda also showed off what it says is the world’s most efficient two-motor hybrid system, one that allows a big family-size car to operate without a transmission with a resulting saving in space and cost. Headed for the North American market next year in the next-generation Accord, it can run on electric or gasoline power or a combination of the two.

The main electric motor produces 221 lb-ft of torque and is used to launch the car, which can run for up to 24 km on battery power alone. The second electric motor is used as a generator to recharge the batteries. At highway speeds, the electric motor drops out and a 134-horsepower gasoline engine takes over.

The IC engine also comes into use to drive the generator and keep the batteries charged, much like the Chevrolet Volt. With the big electric motor able to get the car to cruising speed there is no need for a transmission.

The company also turned us loose on the big oval of the adjacent Twin-Ring Motegi racetrack in an Accord-size sedan equipped with the new V-6 sending 310 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels through the seven-speed DSG gearbox and a pair of 27-horsepower electric motors powering the rear wheels.

In addition to the abundance of instant torque when accelerating, one motor is programmed to send more power to the outside wheel in a corner while the other applies negative torque to the inside wheel.

Off-the-line performance can be silent and seamless with the twin electric motors providing the go – or is truly impressive if you get into the throttle and add the V-6 to the equation. Turn-in is exemplary and transient response exceptional thanks to the rear wheels being used to pull the car into the turn. Add to this the ability to get on the power earlier when existing the corner and you’ve got a true sports sedan.

Look for this combination in a forthcoming replacement for the big Acura RL sedan and the replacement for the NSX sports car.

On Honda's R&D Strategy:

Honda has always been in the forefront of developing technologies which provide a positive contribution to people's lives and to society as a whole and this will never change.

So in our R&D activities, Honda will always strive to be a world leader in all manner of technologies which are really useful for mankind. This is nothing new - it was the philosophy of our founder Soichiro Honda - and it will continue to shape the direction of our R&D in the future.

On how Honda's sporting/racing heritage be incorporated in future models:

Motor racing and sports cars have always been an essential part of Honda's DNA. It's too early to talk about specific replacements for sporting models such as the Civic Type R, the S2000 and the NSX but you can be sure we are actively involved right now in evaluating and analysing just how our sporting DNA can be incorporated into our future model range.

On safety:
Honda has always been a leader in the field of safety technology and we intend to continue to lead in the future. Last year we received a Euro NCAP Advanced award for our CMBS - Collision Mitigation Brake System and of course this is a great honour. But for the future we believe that what we call "intelligent technology" will become more and more important in terms of automobile technology and so we have established the Honda Research Institute near Frankfurt whose specific brief is to develop these fundamental new technologies in collaboration with outside institutions such as Universities. So this is where we are directing our efforts in the field of automobile safety for the future.

On Honda's vision for sustainable mobility:

The whole concept of sustainable mobility is vitally important. In the short term our approach is to improve the efficiency of the internal combustion engine - both petrol and diesel engines - but this is not enough to really talk about sustainable mobility.

For that we need to think about renewable energies and also renewable energy carriers such as electricity or hydrogen to ensure that we can provide the most appropriate energy source for different requirements.

So therefore Honda is also putting a great deal of effort into developing these renewable energy technologies in an environmentally friendly manner. For example, Honda is already producing solar panels so we can produce electricity from solar energy and this energy can then be used to produce hydrogen very efficiently. We are also working on technologies to produce Ethanol as an energy carrier. So our approach is that it's not just the engine and powertrain that need to be optimised but we also have to think about the energy production side of the equation. When we reach that point, then we can really start talking about sustainable mobility.

Based on our commitment to innovation and original technology creation, Honda is working to help address the world's environmental challenges, such as global climate change, emissions reduction and energy sustainability.

Honda is taking a comprehensive portfolio approach that involves advanced powertrain and energy technologies for the near and longer terms.

Honda's unique strategy also includes further improvements to gasoline-engine fuel efficiency, including the expanding use of gasoline-electric hybrid technology; the development of viable alternatives to gasoline, including compressed natural gas, non-food-based biofuels, electric vehicles and hydrogen-powered fuel-cell electric cars; and advanced energy production and distribution technologies including solar cells, co-generation systems and more efficient means of producing renewable biofuels.

IMPROVING FUEL EFFICIENCY

Ever since the company was founded, we have focused on meeting the mobility needs of our customers as well as concern for the environment, including leadership in fuel efficiency and emission-reduction technologies.

In the 1960s, Honda reinforced its commitment by establishing its Blue Skies for Our Children philosophy, and has maintained its position as a fuel-efficiency leader.

Honda is committed to further advancements in internal combustion engine efficiency, with a focus on the broad application of technologies such as VTEC and Variable Cylinder Management (VCM), and with the expanded application of pinnacle technologies such as Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system.

-As one of the most affordable hybrids available on the road today, the five-passenger Honda Insight, utilizes an interactive Ecological Drive Assist System to help enhance customers' fuel-efficient driving capabilities.

-Our new two-seat CR-Z sports hybrid expands Honda's line of hybrid vehicles by offering good fuel economy with sporty characteristics.

-Second-generation VCM technology is being used in theAccord V-6 sedan and coupe, Pilot SUV, Accord Crosstour and Odyssey minivan.

-Extensive use of advanced materials that improve fuel economy while allowing engineers to meet other critical targets such as vehicle safety.

REDUCING EMISSIONS

Honda has led all automakers in the introduction of vehicles that meet or exceed increasingly stringent exhaust emissions regulation:

-First gasoline-powered vehicles to meet American LEV, ULEV, SU-LEV, and AT-PZEV certifications.

-For model year 2011, all Honda and Acura vehicles meet or exceed Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions standards on an individual model basis, without the use of fleet averaging.

-Honda has been a leader in the application of overhead valve four-stroke engines to its power sports and power equipment product lines. All 2008 and newer Honda motorcycles, including competition models, and all Honda power equipment lines use OHV four-stroke engine technology.

FUEL-CELL TECHNOLOGY

Honda has paced the industry in the development and deployment of fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) technology as well as the refuelling infrastructure that will be required to take it to the mass market.

-Honda introduced the world's first production fuel-cell vehicle, the Honda FCX, in the U.S. and Japan in October 2002.

-Honda's FCX Clarity, the successor to the FCX, was the world's first purpose-built fuel-cell electric vehicle and the first to be manufactured on a dedicated production line.

-The FCX Clarity, with Honda's compact and efficient V Flow fuel-cell stack, achieves performance on par with a four-cylinder, five-passenger, gasoline-powered sedan but with three times the fuel efficiency.

CLEANER-ENERGY RESEARCH

Honda's efforts have gone beyond developing new vehicle technologies.
Honda has also focused its research and development resources on the creation of new sources of cleaner power.

-Solar cells: Honda-developed photovoltaic solar cells significantly reduce the energy and carbon-dioxide emissions in the manufacturing phase. Honda subsidiary Soltec Ltd. began mass production of Honda solar cells at its new Kumamoto, Japan, factory in October 2008. We will also be using these solar cells at our new Honda headquarters in Markham, Ont.

-Flexible fuel: Honda has developed a flexible-fuel system that enables engines to operate on either 100 per cent ethanol or a wide range of ethanol-gasoline fuel mixtures.

-Biofuel: To address the need for more efficient means of producing bio-ethanol in other areas of the world, Honda R&D and the Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE) are researching new technology to produce ethanol from soft-biomass, a renewable resource of plant-derived material.

There are numerous environmental challenges, and there are also numerous potential solutions to meet issues. That is why we have adopted a portfolio approach instead of only focusing on one specific technology.

In the near term, however, we believe optimum benefits will come from further advancements to fuel-efficient gasoline engines as well as gas-electric hybrid technology to help reduce our products' greenhouse gas emissions.

Hi, I'm Art St. Cyr, Chief Engineer of the 2011 Honda Odyssey.

I'm here with a member of my development team at Honda's R&D Center in Ohio to tell you about the all-new Odyssey coming to Honda showrooms this Fall.

This fourth generation Odyssey is the first one developed by a team of Honda engineers in the U.S. and it will be built exclusively at a Honda plant in Alabama.

But that's only one reason we call this vehicle an "American Odyssey." The majority of my team of engineers are also longtime Odyssey customers. Many of us have owned three or more Odyssey's in our lives.

And we used this intimate knowledge and experience with the product to create an all-new vehicle focused on the needs of American customers within this uniquely North American vehicle segment.

The minivan segment was built on the strength of the Baby Boomers as the main customer.

We had a major challenge in how to keep the minivan characteristics the Baby Boomer customer appreciated while reaching out to a demanding new customer in Generation Y, the first generation to grow up with this vehicle class.

This required more modern styling and more intuitive features, which everyone likes, but GenY demands, all while keeping the legendary functionality that Odyssey has brought to the market in the past.

The current Odyssey is already a class leader in customer satisfaction and we recognize that.

Our objective is first to retain the core values that have made the Odyssey the industry benchmark for minivans, including class-leading fuel economy, safety, quality and reliability. But to create new value, we focused on three core themes: to make the Odyssey more intuitive, more functional and more comfortable, wrapping the entire package in a stylish and distinctive design.

Our goal was to make Odyssey the ultimate family vehicle, really a vehicle for the modern American family. A customer who is more connected to the world and wants to spend more time with family -- desiring quantity time, not just quality time. So, this is a vehicle we think the customer will want to spend a lot of time in.

Today, we're going to show you the 2011 Odyssey's top of the line "Touring Elite" model.

Exterior Styling
The first thing you'll notice with the 2011 Odyssey is a much more stylish shape.
It's lower and wider, which is not just for a sportier look, but it makes it roomier and more aerodynamic.

We recognize the minivan is first and foremost a functional vehicle. One thing we know and confirmed throughout this development was that minivan customers were unwilling to sacrifice any of their interior space and functionality. So, we focused on maintaining and enhancing this interior space.

Let's talk about a few of the new styling features. We start with premium features like high-intensity discharge headlights in the front, and an 18-inch tire and wheel package.

Inside you may notice the bigger brakes for better secure braking feeling.

And, as introduced at the Chicago Auto show, we also moved the door handles closer together for a cleaner look and added safety and style features such as a turn signal to the side mirror.

As Odyssey customers ourselves, we know the importance of being able to identify your vehicle in a sea of minivans and SUVs in parking lots. So, we gave it a signature "lightning bolt design" for a distinctive and fresh modern look.

Our team originally called this "100 meter styling" because we wanted a strong styling statement that will make it easy for our customers to find their Odyssey in a crowded parking lot, even from 100 meters away. .

This new design also provides better visibility from inside, allowing us to lower the glass line for better visibility for third row passengers.

But with this distinctive styling, we found in our focus group research that people were surprised to learn that we could make this interior more functional and roomy, even with this sporty styling package.

As I already mentioned we realize that functionality is still the main reason people buy minivans. So, our goal was to enhance our class-leading interior functionality from the current Odyssey.

Hi, I'm Steven Frey, principal engineer for the 2011 Honda Odyssey. As Art stated, we've created a new interior design focused on the three themes of making this Odyssey more intuitive, more functional and more comfortable.

Let me show you specifically how we worked toward this in the front row. And as you'll see, the execution is really about attention to detail from the moment you open the door -- from the convenience of a puddle light at the bottom of the front door to the improved interior ambient lighting in the foot area, and as well as from overhead.

We've made a significant effort to increase the comfort in the front row. One area of focus was to identify the surfaces that the customers most often touch, by adding padding to areas like the door lining upper and the armrests. We've made our customer's "quantity time," more enjoyable on those long family drives.

As Art mentioned, the increased exterior width has directly translated to an increased interior width -- we added almost an inch of extra shoulder room here in the front row.

And to further improve seat comfort, we added a new power lumbar feature, which gives the driver 10-way power adjustment -- something that discerning customers can really appreciate.
In this technology age, we also set out to make Odyssey more intuitive.

Our design concept for the center stack area was to separate the heating & cooling controls, the 12-speaker premium sound audio controls and the navigation system into three distinct areas.

We identified the primary use controls for each, and relocated them to make them easier to find and more intuitive to use. Of course we paid attention to even the smallest of details, like moving the glove box latch closer to the driver, moving the heated seat switches to the heating and cooling area and simplifying the operation of our navigation system.

We also understand with today's modern family, there is an increasing need for hidden, secure storage that is functional and easy to use, so we wanted to enhance and improve their ability to store the ever increasing number of new gadgets in the market.

To address this need, we added what we're calling the "Media Tray," specifically designed to hold things like your cell phones and MP3 players. We even moved the power outlets directly next to this unique new storage compartment and found room to add a cup holder.

Now let me tell you about an experience that one of our team members shared with us.

On his long family trips, he would bring along a small cooler to keep his drinks and snacks cool. The problem was finding a good place to put it that was safe and easy to access. We took this challenge and created the "cool box" function.

Inside this even larger storage compartment there's enough room in here to store drinks and snacks for you and your kids. We sized it to fit common-use items like six 12-oz, cans or even four 20-oz. beverage bottles, and it will keep them cold for hours.

To compliment these functional storage compartments, we also added this new center console, which we designed to hold large items such as a purse. We also looked at the new and unique beverage containers in the market today, and made these cup holders functional with drinks as small as a red bull, or as large as a big gulp. We even made it removable to allow easy access into the second row.

Now, with all of these new storage areas, combined with those in the door liners, you'll have ample room to hold small, medium and large items, all within easy reach of the driver.

Second Row Area
Now, let me show you how we improved the comfort and functionality of the second row, with flexible seating that operates in three main configurations to comfortably and easily accommodate the needs of either adults or children.

The primary seating configuration is with two captain's chairs, and the center seat in the down position. In this configuration, you can really get a feel for the interior spaciousness of the second row.

Let me highlight some of the features here:

Cup and bottle holders in the center console, door linings and the arm rest.

Not only does the center seat make a great arm rest, but we increased its width by four inches to make it a seat everyone can enjoy sitting in.

And, our all-new 16.2 inch Ultra-Wide Rear Entertainment System with the ability to show movies in true wide mode, or split the screen in half, and allow two separate inputs, for those times when your children can't agree on what to watch on those long family road trips.

And as all parents know, kids generate lots of trash, so we decided to add this new feature which we're calling the "Trash Ring". The ring flips up from the base of the center console, and easily fits a standard plastic shopping bag. You assemble it around the ring and it fits securely in place.

Now there's no reason to find empty hamburger wrappers on the floor at the end of your next family vacation.

The primary mode offers the maximum amount of head and shoulder room, but we wanted to offer even more functional and flexible seating configurations, so we took advantage of the wider exterior, and created the second seating configuration called "Wide Mode" seating. Here, both outboard seats move almost two inches, allowing us to fit among the largest child seats in the market in all three seats, and each seat has its own child seat anchors.

The third seating configuration offers the most flexibility and functionality. For families with children in two car seats, we've added a comfort slide feature to the center seat. You can move your infant almost six inches closer to you in the front row. Re-inserting the pacifier does not require pulling over to the side of the road any more.

Earlier we mentioned the low and wide design of this new Odyssey, and here is one of the primary benefits of this wider package. Even with two child seats in use in the second row, with a simple tip and slide motion the outboard seat slides forward creating ample space for an adult to ingress into the third row. And to make this even easier, we relocated the seat lever for more intuitive access.

Third Row Area
While the second row was designed to accommodate three child seats, the third row was designed to enable three adults to sit comfortably.

We made the interior cabin wider back here for increased adult comfort by keeping the slide door motor below shoulder height. This was the key to enabling three adults to sit in the rear.

We also increased 3rd row leg room by one inch and added a center arm rest

New for the 2011 Odyssey, is an integrated third-row sunshade to go along with those in the second row.

The combination of extra shoulder room, leg room and as Art mentioned earlier, the lower glass line, creates a much more spacious feeling in the third row.

So, this is not only a comfortable space for adults, but with HDMI and RCA jacks and a 150-watt power outlet, the third row becomes a great space for families that want or need to create a separate area for older children, away from younger siblings.

Interior Summary
A critical aspect of Odyssey's value to American families has been the flexibility provided by the large, accessible cargo area. This vehicle is used for everything from a commuter vehicle, to a kid hauler, to a cargo hauler. So we needed to focus on what this vehicle can carry in addition to people.

We retained Odyssey's great cargo capabilities for large items like luggage, golf clubs, hockey bags and even larger items such as 4 x 8 sheets of plywood.

In addition, we also added some functional, smaller storage bays where you can organize and safely stow washer fluid, first aid kits and other items that are needed by today's families.

Making all of this even easier to manage, is a further enhancement of the innovative third row Magic Seat that Honda introduced to the industry more than a decade ago. With a more intuitive one-strap stowage concept, we have improved the ability to stow or lift the magic seat with this simple strap. Now, the storage area has become even easier to use.

I've just given you some exciting interior features that make this 2011 Odyssey more intuitive, more functional and more comfortable. I haven't touched on every interior feature, such as the 15 cup holders, cargo hooks and other surprises that we've added based on our focus on the real world needs of our customers -- including those we discovered through our own experience as customers of this vehicle.

One of the interesting things is that during one of our team meetings, we actually thought it would be fun to add up how many Odysseys each of the team members had, and over the years, we realized that as a team we have owned 46 Odysseys in our lifetimes. So we have a lot of intimate experience with Odysseys and our families using Odysseys. We used this as an opportunity to enhance some of the already class-leading features that we have on this current Odyssey.

For example, the third row seat has a one-touch, stow function. On the current Odyssey we actually improved that. Instead of having a handle and a strap, we actually changed that to have just a single strap so you can stow and fold the seat down more easily. One of the other things that we did was enhance the logic of the slide door. We know this is a family vehicle that carries parents that are often times dropping their kids off at play dates, at school, at pools, or whatever they're doing, so we enhanced the ability to open the slide door when the vehicle's not in park..

So as long as the vehicle is not moving, you're able to open and close the slide door without the alarm going off. There are many examples of features in this vehicle that are present because we understand the Odyssey customer and how the Odyssey is used. We think it's a much more improved vehicle...a vehicle that customers will really appreciate the attention to detail that we have.

One of the things that was very important for us when we made this minivan, was to make it very intuitive for the customer to use. So in order to validate that goal, for the first time ever at Honda Research and Development, we actually brought our families in to check the vehicle out at a very early development stage. So we had them actually use the controls the way that we thought that they should be used, and what we found was there were many minor changes we could make to make the vehicle much more intuitive for the customer.

On our head unit, we have a CD player and a DVD player. We had a label that said CD and DVD, but during what we're calling the non-expert check, we found people actually trying to put a DVD in the CD slot. So we moved those labels where the CD is on the top, and the DVD is on the bottom. It is now very clear. Also, with our ultra wide rear entertainment system, you can show two movies at the same time on that screen.

We also wanted to find a way to swap the images on the rear entertainment screen, but we found this was somewhat difficult to do. In the end, we added a button that says, "SWAP," to make this function very easy. So, in the end we made a lot of changes. In the end, we made almost 50 different changes based on the "non-expert" check, and we think that the end result is going be a very intuitive vehicle that the customer will really appreciate and easily understand how to use all the controls.

Sleek Exterior, Surprisingly Large Interior

At our focus groups we had an exterior styling mockup and an interior styling mockup that we had customers get in and out of. The general feedback that we received, which really surprised us, was that they really, really liked the exterior styling that you see here. However, when they got in the interior mockup, nobody believed that we could actually fit all the space they found into this exterior styling.

When we asked them which one of the cars was their favorite, they didn't necessarily pick this one, because they said it didn't appear to have enough space for what they need. So, we think they'll be really surprised when they actually see that all that stuff that we wanted to have in this vehicle is in this vehicle.

Walk-Through Flexibility

The current Odyssey has a fold down tray in the vehicle. The purpose of the improved fold down tray in the new Odyssey was to allow the customers to move into the back row from the front row and basically have some walk-through functionality. What we found through our research is that two things happened. One was that customers don't really use that walk-through feature very often. And the second finding was that the customers really desired more storage space, especially in the front row of the vehicle.

So what we did in this case was to try to make the best of both worlds. We installed a center console that has huge storage space inside, enough to fit a woman's purse, CDs and anything that you might want to store in the center console. But we also added a feature that actually made it removable. So for customers that actually desire to walk through into the backseat, they're able to remove that center console, walk through to the backseat, reinstall it, and still have all the storage they want.

Along with that center console being removable, it provides the flexibility of being able to put long objects such as 2X4s or PVC pipe in the removable console space. We think this is the best of both worlds, allowing the customer the flexibility to choose the configuration that they want.

American Honda’s Executive Vice President of Sales John Mendel, along with other business leaders and academics, gathered at The Ohio State University May 3 to discuss ways of reducing gasoline in transportation in a three-day conference called: Moving Ahead 2010. Following are his excerpted remarks.

It’s great to be in Columbus... a real hometown for Honda. Our first U.S. manufacturing operations were established here 30-plus years ago … and we have a major R&D center that creates many of the products we build here.

Both our manufacturing and R&D operations have a strong relationship with our host, Ohio State University. We have partnered with OSU in advanced research … we employ their graduates …and our associates root fanatically for the Buckeyes. So, we’re very happy that this important new event is kicking off here.

And this is a critically important event. The realization of more efficient and sustainable forms of mobility is key to the future of our planet … and to the future of personal transportation for millions of people around the world.

It’s also key to the future of the auto industry. I’ve been a part of the industry for more than 30 years now. And I think I can say that for all automakers … the ability to develop advanced environmental technologies is no longer just a means to gain competitive advantage. The truth is that any manufacturer without these technologies will not long survive. And you can look at the mergers and joint technology ventures in our industry over the past year as proof of this new reality.

This pursuit of sustainable transportation solutions amounts to something of a new race for our business, with many promising technologies vying for the lead and various companies racing to bring these technologies to market.

But in our view this shouldn’t be the kind of race where different companies or technologies are pitted against one another. Rather, we should race with each other toward a common goal … of creating technology that provides the world with greater mobility … while dramatically reducing CO2 emissions and creating a more sustainable energy future for generations to come.

"The effort to promote the virtues of one technology should not result in the demonizing of another" In our view … the key to winning this race is not declaring a winner until the technology has actually run the race. That’s a critical distinction, because the race for a cleaner and more sustainable future is a marathon, not a sprint. It will be decades before any new technology can be called the all-out winner. And while there are a lot of opinions … and even more desires … no one can say with certainty today which technology or combination of technologies will be first to the finish line. The effort to promote the virtues of one technology should not result in the demonizing of another. … or in policymakers laying all of their chips on the technology du jour … rather than promoting fair and open competition among all the players and all promising technologies.

This is a crucial point. Because rushing to select a winner could lead us in the wrong direction … resulting in the loss not only of time and substantial investment of development resources … but, more importantly, the trust of our customers and society.

Regulators and legislators at both the federal and state levels should adopt this perspective. To put the country on a course toward a single technology without fully understanding the implications … including whether consumers will buy it … will put us behind in achieving our objectives. And in the long run will be very costly to boot.

Rather, the critical role of policymakers should be to tell industry what goals must be met … a performance standard if you will … and leave it to the industry to figure out how to get there. To do that, we will vigorously pursue a variety of viable technologies for the near-, mid- and long-term to determine which approaches best meet the multiple challenges of air quality … climate change … and energy sustainability.

Certainly, there is a lot riding on the ability of the auto industry to create a new technology pathway. But it would be wrong to believe that the right path to the future of the automobile rests solely with the automakers. Indeed, real progress can not be achieved without the efforts of energy companies, governments and NGOs. And all of us must keep our focus on the customer.

Automakers can’t just build technologically advanced automobiles. We must make automobiles fully functioning … so people want to buy them … and affordable … so people can buy them.

Government can have tremendous influence on this outcome through regulations and energy policies that foster a marketplace that will remain open to a fair competition among the various technologies. This will allow the marketplace to do its job as the ultimate judge of who wins and who loses.

As a case in point, a little more than ten years since Honda introduced America’s first hybrid vehicle, there are some 26 distinct hybrid models on the market … but they still represent just around 2 percent of the total market. And even this level of penetration has benefited from generous incentives from the government and industry.

The reality is that the price of gasoline is the single greatest influence on the sales of more fuel-efficient vehicles including hybrids. If we can’t convince people to move to a hybrid … which is as fully-functioning and as easy to refuel as an internal combustion engine vehicle … we have to seriously consider what will get them to accept battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles with their myriad limitations including cost, driving range, and re-fueling or recharging issues.

"We must ultimately replace petroleum as the fuel that powers personal transportation." What we do know … is that we must ultimately replace petroleum as the fuel that powers personal transportation. But accomplishing this challenge requires that we focus on two critical needs … a reduction of petroleum use and a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. These are related goals in many cases because burning less gasoline reduces CO2 emissions. But the size of that reduction depends on which alternative is adopted and how it is deployed.

Looking at the technology race … will this mean hybrids … plug-in hybrids … biofuel … battery electric vehicles … fuel cell electric vehicles? The answer is … well … “yes.” Because we need to manage short, mid- and long-range demands of society in balance with the evolution of all these technologies. And the reality is that each technology has unique challenges somewhere along that timeline. And even long term solutions require step-by-step progress that must begin today.

So, developing multiple pathways makes more sense than trying to pick tomorrow’s winner today. And by the way, there may well be more than one winner. For instance, we might find that small battery electric vehicles work for commuting … with a fuel cell electric vehicle a better solution for heavier vehicles or for longer trips.

Surely, the internal combustion engine will continue to play a role in personal transportation ... and can be made more efficient. Additionally, bio-fuels represent a great potential alternative to gasoline. But it has to be the right biofuel. The key to the success of biofuels is that we should be able to simply “drop it in” to the existing fleet using the existing infrastructure.

But the drive for bio-ethanol derived from food stocks was a case where prematurely picking a winner may not have made a big contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. And while I realize that it was good business for our nation’s farmers, it actually created a host of unintended problems … and undermined credibility with consumers.

Honda is now working on so-called second-generation biofuels – which means the sustainable production of alcohol-based fuels from plant waste material, instead of edible plants. The potential for algae-derived bio-gasoline is also promising because it would offer the additional merit of not needing to change-over cars to run on ethanol…and avoids new infrastructure costs. But these technologies are a long way from mass production.

One of the best alternative fuel opportunities in our grasp today is natural gas. I don’t suggest this to promote the fact that Honda is the only automaker mass-producing a natural gas vehicle … the Civic GX. Natural gas is an inexpensive, clean burning and abundant domestic fuel. The Civic GX is the cleanest vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine that the EPA has ever certified for everyday use. And natural gas results in 25 percent lower CO2 emissions than gasoline.

However, without a convenient and affordable refueling infrastructure natural gas cannot succeed. It’s an important lesson. When it comes to an alternative fuel … no matter how good the technology … no automaker can go down the path alone.

For the near-term, expanded use of hybrid technology represents the best direction to reduce petroleum use … because hybrids leverage both existing internal combustion engine technology and our existing petroleum refueling infrastructure … and represent a bridge to the next generation of electromotive technologies.

But even with hybrids, cost and affordability must continue to be addressed. As I said earlier, there is a strong correlation between hybrid sales and the price of gasoline which demonstrates that consumers are looking closely at the cost benefit ratio … and many still don’t see the overall benefit.

"Honda's strategy is focused on affordability" That’s why Honda’s strategy is focused on affordability, with the goal to make hybrid technology available and appealing to more people.

We have created a family of hybrid models that meet a variety of needs and interests … high fuel economy … a fun-to-drive sporty coupe … and a mainstream family sedan … with additional plans to introduce hybrid technology to our luxury Acura brand lineup in the coming years.

Looking ahead, what will advance and extend the contribution of hybrid vehicles is the introduction of lithium ion battery technology. But improvements in both the performance and cost of batteries are required. Toward this end, Honda has invested in a joint venture to accelerate our ability to introduce lithium ion batteries in future hybrids.

Plug-in hybrids are also being looked to with increasing interest. Certainly, plug-ins would contribute positively to energy sustainability and energy security concerns. But in some areas plug-ins are actually worse than regular hybrids in reducing CO2 emissions.

Also, the larger battery required for a plug-in hybrid vehicle increases the vehicle weight and cost, reducing overall efficiency, while raising additional concerns about battery durability and cost. These issues diminish the payback for a smaller-sized plug-in hybrid vehicle. I don’t mean to suggest that Honda doesn’t believe in plug-ins … with our focus on original technology, we obviously have a few things in the kitchen. But any near-term alternative energy technology we green light for production must offer promise in reducing CO2 emissions and be affordable and practical for the customer.

Of course, there is renewed excitement about battery electric vehicles. And Honda understands electromotive technologies as well as anyone. Starting in 1997, we leased some 340 Honda EV Plus electric vehicles to customers … primarily in California. We developed the EV Plus from scratch as an electric car and it was the first to use non-lead acid batteries.

Looking at real world electric range … which includes the EPA’s 30 percent downward adjustment … our 1997 EV Plus had superior or at least comparable driving range to most of the models now coming “to market.” Fifteen years later, even with the advent of lithium ion batteries, the cost of the battery remains extremely high … as much as half the cost of the vehicle. So, despite legitimate advancements … the technology and the infrastructure remain significant hurdles to high-volume market appeal.

Battery electric vehicles contribute to energy security and the reduced use of petroleum … but like plug-ins they’re not the best solution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions until there are fundamental changes in the nation’s grid. This is a concern shared in other regions of the world. A top executive with a Chinese automaker said just last week that with China deriving 83 percent of its electricity from coal that now is “not the right time to promote pure electric vehicles” in that country.

"Honda is conducting research on a short-distance battery electric vehicle as a 'city commuter car'" There remains hope for the future … and that’s why Honda is conducting research on a short-distance battery electric vehicle as a "city commuter car" – which we see as the practical limit of the technology at the present time. We're now studying the U.S. market with a view to introducing this electric commuter car in the future.

But we continue to believe that a fuel cell electric vehicle is the ultimate solution to reduce CO2 emissions … and meet the real world needs and expectations of consumers. A fuel cell car is a full electric vehicle. But rather than use electricity from the grid, it generates electricity on board.

Among all electromotive technology options fuel cell electric vehicles are about as close to identical to the functionality of existing gasoline-powered automobiles as you can get. As a practical daily driver, the Honda FCX Clarity is a fuel cell electric vehicle with 240 miles driving range … nearly triple that of today’s EVs. And compared to the slow recharging requirements of a battery electric vehicle, the fuel cell electric car can be refilled with hydrogen in minutes. Clarity is also a spacious and comfortable mid-size sedan that has surprised the people who have driven it … including our 15 lease customers in California now driving it on a daily basis.

Importantly, even using natural gas to produce the hydrogen, the Clarity achieves a 62 percent reduction in CO2 emissions. And a 40% reduction versus a battery electric vehicle that uses electricity from the U.S average power grid. For the long-term, we are working on producing hydrogen from renewable sources. One such interesting approach is Honda’s long-term investment to develop a next-generation prototype solar hydrogen station … now operating at our Los Angeles R&D center. This compact system was designed with the idea of daily home refueling of a fuel cell electric vehicle.

Certainly, as with other alternative fuel technologies, fuel cell electric vehicles have challenges to overcome … including a refueling infrastructure and cost reduction. But the full functionality of the vehicle and the potential of a solar hydrogen station are the reasons we view the fuel cell electric vehicle as the ultimate alternative to petroleum … and the best path to reduce CO2 emissions in the long run.

But as I said at the outset … when it comes to alternative fuels, no automaker can be successful without support from energy companies, policymakers and consumers. For fuel cell electric vehicles, there was the promise of a hydrogen highway in California … as well as federal support for fuel cell technology. But this seems to be in constant peril … whether due to the difficult economy or as some new technology comes along. There must be consistent and sustained policy in the near term … to realize the tremendous benefits that fuel cell electric vehicles offer for the long term.

"Policymakers must play an expansive role by defining the goals but not the specific technologies." Policymakers must play an expansive role, not a limiting role … by defining the goals … but not the specific technologies. Government can also contribute through effective energy policies that support both near and longer-tem solutions, and working in partnership with all the key players … while avoiding the temptation to pre-determine the winners and losers before the race has been run.

You know … I realize there is a lot of skepticism about the will and skill of the traditional auto industry to make a real contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions … and to wean America and the world from its dependence on petroleum. After all, we have earned a reputation … as an industry … as being anti anything the government wanted us to do. Years ago, this actually prompted a quote from our founder Mr. Honda that I will paraphrase for you … he said “when the government passes new regulations, some companies hire 50 more lawyers while Honda hires 50 more engineers.”

I know that the industry CAN lead. Air quality advances over the last 40 years have been nothing short of astounding. And I’m proud to say that Honda led the way … or as some have said … showed the way in meeting virtually every low emission vehicle standard established by the federal government and the state of California.

I’m talking about a thousand-fold reduction in hydrocarbon emissions that the entire industry has now achieved … to the point where we have gasoline internal combustion engines that can achieve credit as Partial Zero Emission Vehicles.

I cannot make the case that this success is an indication of what we can do on every issue … but I think it demonstrates what can be accomplished when the industry and policy makers focus on a key objective. And that’s what we must do now.

The challenges we now face are different … but by entering into a race with each other. by focusing on the same finish line … and by making certain our technology solutions meet the needs of our customers … I know we can advance personal mobility … and protect our planet. And that will make winners out of us all.

TORRANCE, California, March 12 (Reuters) - Coming not so soon and probably not to a house near you is the home solar hydrogen refueling station -- Honda Motor Co's (7267.T) latest idea in its drive to make hydrogen the fuel of choice for zero emission cars.

The Japanese auto giant believes hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles offer the best long-term alternative to fossil fuels and the company showed on Friday a refueling breakthrough that it says points to a home version down the road.

Most major automakers have spent billions of dollars in researching hydrogen-powered fuel cells, tempted by the idea of a car that uses no gasoline and emits only water vapor. But Honda is widely seen as the hydrogen leader, while others like General Motors GM.UL put more effort into battery-powered electric vehicles like the upcoming Volt.

One of the big barriers to hydrogen car deployment is the lack of refueling infrastructure, leading Honda to bet that the future lies in combining a public station network with a more modest home option.

Honda's home option will comprise a solar-powered hydrogen refueling station using solar panels.

"Customers can choose how they interact with both of them based on their annual miles and their habits," said Stephen Ellis, fuel cell manager at the Honda's North American headquarters in Torrance, California.

'BIGGEST PROGRESS'

"The key thing to remember is that with five-minute refueling you are good for another 240 miles," Ellis added.

That range comes from the "fast-fill" public station, of which there are just a handful in Southern California, where Honda leases 15 FCX Clarity hydrogen-powered vehicles and is set to distribute more in coming months.

Eight hours of home solar refueling would guarantee a smaller range of 30 miles (50 km) or about 10,000 miles (16,000 km per year -- enough for an average commuting car.

At the Los Angeles R&D center, engineers refueled the sleek FCX Clarity sedan with a new single-unit station connected to a solar array that replaces a two-unit system, cutting costs and improving efficiency by 25 percent.

"This is wonderful progress, the biggest progress," said Ikuya Yamashita, the chief engineer of the station.

The station uses a 6-kilowatt solar array, composed of 48 panels and thin film solar cells developed by a Honda subsidiary. It breaks down the water into hydrogen in what Honda calls a "virtually carbon-free energy cycle."

The FCX Clarity's hydrogen "stack" -- or the electricity generator -- is around the size of an attache case, tucked between the two front seats, and is a fifth of the stack size developed a decade ago.

The car is likely to be sold commercially around 2018 in the luxury large sedan category, while the solar hydrogen refueling system could move beyond the research stage and into the market-ready phase around 2015.

"A lot of this work is not necessarily for today's economic situation," said Ellis. "This is for tomorrow, when most people feel energy prices will be higher."

Honda Performance Development recently began shipping 1.5-liter Honda Fit engines to racers planning to run the engine in Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Formula F competition.

Through its introduction to the category, HPD hopes to strengthen FF's position as the first step in American open-wheel auto racing.

The initial batch of fuel-injected Honda L15A7 overhead-cam engines was shipped to competitors who had previously secured their orders via cash deposit. The Fit engine can be adapted for installation in existing FF chassis.

"This is an exciting day for all of us at HPD," said Erik Berkman, president of Honda Performance Development. "We hope that this foundational step in our grassroots motorsports initiative will help grow the FF class by making it more affordable and competitive."

The Honda FF engine was developed by HPD in cooperation with Maryland-based Quicksilver RacEngines. The engine was developed to equal the performance of the traditional Kent power plant through utilization of an intake restrictor plate and appropriately mapped Engine Control Unit (ECU), as confirmed during comparative testing with representative Kent engines under SCCA supervision. Final track output will be mandated by the SCCA through its restrictor determination.

Honda-powered FFs are approved for SCCA competition effective March 1, 2010.

Developed from the current Honda Fit, introduced in 2009, the L15A7 engine in FF form is intended to provide open-wheel racers with a modern, fuel-injected design offering superior service life, increased availability and lower operating costs. Engine rebuilds will be reduced, with a corresponding reduction in the need for top-end refreshing. In addition, crankshaft and valve-spring life should be extended dramatically; and most ignition and all carburetor maintenance will be eliminated."Many of us at HPD, myself included, have been involved in FF racing," said Marc Sours, HPD Production Division Manager and Large Project Leader for HPD's grassroots effort. "We believe in the class and want to see it grow in popularity. With the delivery of this first batch of Honda FF engines, and future orders, we are hoping to increase participation through economical competition."

Honda Fit race engines can be purchased as a complete package, including a base L15A7 engine and FF engine conversion kit (including intake, exhaust, dry sump, lightweight alternator, restrictor plate and ECU). Individual component parts will also be available for purchase separately.

HPD also offers chassis kits for three of the most popular FF designs: the Swift DB-1, Swift DB-6 and Van Diemen RF99-09 models. Several current race-car manufacturers, including Fast
Forward Components (Piper) and Citation Engineering, offer FF chassis ready to accept the Fit engine.

This is an older concept of the Honda ASM Hybrid Minivan, it was rumoured to come to North America a few years back, but obviously was put on the back burner, could this idea be coming back to life?
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Honda is poised to make a cautious foray into development of EVs and may display a prototype model at the forthcoming Tokyo auto show. If a production model follows, initial availability is expected to be limited to just the domestic Japanese market and perhaps one export market and region, e.g. in the US.
Despite this tentative step into the EV sector, where domestic rivals Nissan, Toyota and Mitsubishi already have clear strategies, it is believed Honda will continue to dedicate the majority of powertrain technology R&D towards further development of gasoline-electric hybrids. The OEM retains scepticism concerning the performance and safety of EVs and the available infrastructure for recharging.

In a separate report, and in keeping with Honda’s current strategy, the OEM’s president, Takanobu Ito is reported in the Nikkei as saying the company plans to release a hybrid minivan around 2011. The executive is quoted as saying: "First of all, it is important to expand our line-up; we want to introduce a hybrid model to minivans, which continue to enjoy strong customer demand."

One more step closer to.....WORLD DOMINATION!!!!KYOTO, Japan, April 21, 2009 - Honda Research Institute Japan Co., Ltd. (HRI-JP), a subsidiary of Honda R&D Co., Ltd., Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR) and Shimadzu Corporation have collaboratively developed the world’s first*1 Brain Machine Interface (BMI) technology that uses electroencephalography (EEG) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) along with newly developed information extraction technology to enable control of a robot by human thought alone. It does not require any physical movement such as pressing buttons. This technology will be further developed for the application to human-friendly products in the future by integrating it with intelligent technologies and/or robotic technologies.

During the human thought process, slight electrical current and blood flow change occur in the brain. The most important factor in the development of the BMI technology is the accuracy of measuring and analyzing these changes. The newly developed BMI technology uses EEG, which measures changes in electrical potential on the scalp, and NIRS, which measures changes in cerebral blood flow, with a newly developed information extraction technology which enables statistical processing of the complex information from these two types of sensors. As a result, it became possible to distinguish brain activities with high precision without any physical motion, but just human thought alone.

The BMI technology announced by HRI-JP and ATR in 2006 used a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner to measure brain activities. The large size and powerful magnetic field generated by the fMRI scanner limited the locations and conditions where it can be used. As the newly developed measuring device uses EEG and NIRS sensors, it can be transported to and used in various locations.

First, EEG and NIRS sensors are placed on the head of the user. Then, one of four pre-determined body part options*2 is provided to the user. The user imagines moving that body part without making any physical movement. Changes in both brain waves and cerebral blood flow triggered by the brain activity are measured simultaneously. The data obtained are analyzed on a real-time basis to distinguish what the user imagined. Upon receiving the result, Honda’s ASIMO humanoid robot makes corresponding movements such as raising its arm or leg. The world’s highest level*3 accuracy rate of more than 90% was achieved in the tests.

Since 2005, Honda and ATR have been conducting research and development of BMI technology exploring the potential of a new interface which connects people and machines. Honda is looking into the possibility of applying this technology to a people-friendly human interface through integration with other technologies such as artificial intelligence technologies and/or robotics technologies. In May 2006, Honda and ATR successfully developed a BMI technology which utilizes a fMRI scanner and achieved the first success in the world to control a robot hand by decoding brain activities without electrode array implants or special training of the user.

About BMI
While conventional machine-interface uses devices such as switches which need to be operated by a user’s hands or feet, BMI uses brain activity data measured by various devices and enables non-contact control of the machines (such as robots). Invasive BMI, which is widely studied by U.S. and European researchers, requires the surgical implant of electrode arrays, whereas non-invasive BMI uses sensors touching the user’s scalp.
