Wow, I like it!
Nissan has revealed their intention to bring a new sportscar placed under the 370Z model, later at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show.

On an interview with GoAuto, Nissans’ executive vice-president Andy Palmer said that the company plans to extend their sportcar model range beyond the Z and the GT-R current offerings. The new model will be based on the previous Esflow concept, presented about two years ago.

“We think that there is room below that for something very special. And for that we will see you at Tokyo.” said Andy. When asked about what type of power train will be used in the new model he said that it is room for both hybrid and pure electric, thou he seemed to prefer the EV over the hybrid.

“The beauty of pure electric is that there is oodles of torque and power instantaneously. So for a car that is really fun to drive, electric presents with us an opportunity,” Palmer added

Nissan was scarce with other information on the upcoming sportscar, and it still remains to be see what will they bring to Tokyo this year, another Esflow derived concept or a ready-to-go production car.

The revival of the Japanese sportscar is on the way as we speak. Mazda signed a deal with Alfa Romeo and they will likely be putting a Wankel in the MX-5. Meanwhile, Toyota is working on two cars, one that will be cheaper than the GT 86, and another which will likely be a hybrid AWD to revive the Supra name.

So what is Nissan, the maker of the pride of Japan (the GT-R) doing? Well, the successor of the R35 is probably delayed, but we’re expecting something special for the 50th Anniversary of the Fairlady Z.

Could this be it? We don’t know, but Nissan is teasing this concept car ahead of its debut at the Sao Paulo International Motor Show that takes place in Brazil from October 24 to November 4.

All we know is it was designed in Brazil and will “will introduce a unique new genre to the automotive world". Some elements on the car, like the small upper grille the side vents behind the front wheels and he headlights are very similar to those on a GT-R.

Given this description, it’s likely not the successor to the original 200Z, though we could be looking at something for the Datsun brand.

"The showcar will dazzle on two counts," said Shiro Nakamura, Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer of Nissan. “It is a genuinely new and exciting concept, and it will explode with energetic design and impressive color that fully express our impression toward the country."

Powerful four-cylinder turbo to combine with lower weight for the next Nissan 370Z

The next Nissan Z-car will be lighter and smaller than the current 370Z, as Nissan seeks to make its flagship coupe more efficient and better to drive.

Nissan design boss Shiro Nakamura has been reported as saying the next-generation Z-car will have to be leaner in order to appeal to a wider range of buyers.

The new model is expected to drop its 3.7-litre V6 engine in favour of a powerful turbocharged four-cylinder. This, combined with lower weight, would give similar performance – 0-60mph in around six seconds – but greater efficiency, with lower CO2 emissions.

Nakamura has also been reported as saying that work has already started on a concept version of the new Z-car, and although no date has been specified, it could appear at a major motor show in 2014.

There had been speculation that Nissan would produce a replacement for the 200SX – in the shape of another coupe that would rival the Toyota GT 86 and Subaru BRZ. However, with the Z-car going leaner and smaller, it will occupy this space in the range.
