Honda Cars : Honda’s media buying and planning duties go to MediaVest | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

American Honda Motors has concluded its Media Review which began in December. MediaVest was selected as the media agency serving both brands, with RPA selected as the creative agency for the Honda automobile brand and Mullen as the creative agency for the Acura brand.  La Agencia de Orci & Asociados will continue to be Honda's Hispanic creative agency.

MediaVest's role as the separate media agency is expected to result in more sophisticated targeting of the media mix, with a significant improvement in media buying efficiency. "Getting smarter about how we communicate was a critical goal of this process and even with the same level of investment we expect to realize more efficient and targeted media plans, which will increase the amount of money we spend on reaching our customers," said  Michael Accavitti, vice president of National Marketing Operations.

According to a statement by Honda the agency assignment, reflect a major change in strategies for Honda and Acura advertising. The new multi-agency structure will place American Honda at the hub of a collaborative team of agencies, with the focus on heightened creativity, greater efficiency and long-term strategic planning. RPA, Mullen and MediaVest together with Muse Communications (African-American targeted creative) and Orci, which retain the multicultural assignments, will report directly to American Honda rather than through a single agency.

"We are creating a new and highly collaborative path forward that will yield outstanding creative and enable us to focus more of our marketing investment on communicating with our customers," said Accavitti. "We are confident that our new team of agencies will create dynamic marketing campaigns that connect and engage consumers with our products and our brands, while achieving an even higher level of efficiency and effectiveness."

Dedicated workspace at Honda Headquarters
Each agency will have dedicated workspace at American Honda headquarters in Torrance, Calif. where agency personnel can better serve the needs of each brand by collaborating together and with the Honda and Acura teams. In addition, Mullen and MediaVest will be opening or expanding dedicated offices in Southern California. RPA, Muse and Orci are headquartered in Southern California.

From the standpoint of creative agencies, the new structure will enable RPA, Mullen, Muse and Orci to maintain a special focus on the unique needs of each brand at a time when both Honda and Acura have strong momentum with a number of all-new products just introduced or soon coming to market. "With Honda and Acura rolling out incredibly strong new products we think each agency will have a lot of good material to take our creative to the next level," said Accavitti.

Honda has a lineup of new or substantially refreshed models, including the just-introduced 2013 Honda Accord and Civic and a lineup of light trucks led by CR-V, America's top-selling SUV, and the Honda Odyssey. In 2014, Honda has announced plans to greatly expand small car sales with an all-new Honda Fit and a new model based on the Urban SUV Compact revealed at the North American International Auto Show in January 2013.

Acura is in the midst of the complete makeover of its product lineup. In 2012, the brand launched two new gateway Acura models with a redesigned RDX, which has since enjoyed 10 consecutive months of record sales, and the new ILX entry-luxury sedan. For 2013, the all-new 2014 RLX flagship sedan went on sale March 15, with an all-new 2014 MDX coming to market by mid-year. Acura has also announced plans for the introduction of the next generation of the Acura NSX supercar in about two years.

CHICAGO, Feb. 11, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Chicago Automobile Trade Association (CATA), producer of the Chicago Auto Show, and Word of Mouth Marketing Association (WOMMA) presented American Honda Motor Co., Inc. with the first-ever "Driving Engagement" award for best social media campaign of 2012 during the Social Media Preview of the 2013 Chicago Auto Show.

Honda's Driving Engagement awards submission featured a music video from startup band Monsters Calling Home where the band members recorded a music video from inside of their Honda. As part of Honda's larger campaign "Honda Loves You Back," Honda surprised the band by booking them as the musical guest for Jimmy Kimmel Live! and utilized Honda's full range of social media presences to help share their story.

"We are thrilled and proud that the latest edition in our Honda Loves You Back social media campaign has been recognized. We're so grateful for the love our customers express for their Honda vehicles," said Alicia Jones , manager of Social Media at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. WOMMA selected three automotive manufacturers as finalists for the Driving Engagement awards: Nissan and Dodge were the two runners-up. Nissan submitted its "2013 Nissan Pathfinder Presents: An Improv-tastic Road Trip" campaign; Dodge entered its "Inspired by You" campaign to promote the 2013 Dodge Dart.

We saw major brands engaging with Pinterest, great use of video and humor as well partnerships to showcase artists and embrace fans," said Suzanne Fanning , president of WOMMA. "We are grateful to the Chicago Auto Show for allowing us to help recognize the best campaigns of the year, and we look forward to working with them in the future to further 'drive engagement.'"

Honda Cars : Honda wants you to tweet with a guy in a squirrel suit and a Civic designer – you in? | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

Honda apparently still sees itself as an innovative automaker – or at least wants to be seen that way again. Arguably, Honda used to be quite innovative. In recent years, however, the Japanese automaker has been derided for abandoning its outside the box thinking in order to garner a wider customer base.

Honda is now trying to recapture its former identity by surrounding its designers with global innovators from all corners of the marketplace. Honda has recently launched a program called “HondaInnovatorSeries” where customers will be able to live tweet chat with various consumer product inventors as well as Honda designers and engineers with the hash tag #HondaInnovator.

Honda kicked off the social media program with a live chat with the squirrel suit guy yesterday. Tomorrow, they’re following that with Henry Thorne, inventor of the high-tech baby stroller called the Origami Stroller. Other chats will include the minds behind the “Lifesaving Wetsuit,” the “Waterfall Swing,” and the “Laser Keyboard.” Popped into the middle of the lineup is the chat about the “new” Civic.

While this program isn’t completely original, it’s definitely marking a new way forward for automakers. Rather than relying on the dealership sales force to fumble customer inquiries, Honda is opening the floor to the folks behind the vehicles, hopefully getting the correct answers into the hands of those who ask them.
If we’re completely honest, we find this program a bit silly. It’s clear Honda wanted to host a live chat with engineers but feared – as other automakers have shown – that the public just won’t show up. Cleverly, they’ve sandwiched other potentially interesting speakers around its staff. Will the social media stunt work? We’ll have to wait and see.

If you’d like to learn more, or participate in the tweet chat, visit hondainnovator.com to see a full schedule lineup and program description.

Honda is heralding the arrival of its U.S. market icon, the 2013 Civic, unveiled at the Los Angeles auto show last fall. The campaign, via long-time agency RPA, comprises four TV spots, one of which debuted in the Rose Bowl on Tuesday. The new ads have "found" video content to talk about entrepreneurial spirit of inventors and Honda’s engineers. There are more than 10 different inventors portrayed in the spots.

The effort, which also has print and digital elements, mixes product messages with the company's corporate mantra around innovation and continuous improvement (the Japanese philosophy of Keiretsu). Three of the TV spots are for the Civic Sedan, Si Coupe and Hybrid, respectively, and a 60-second spot, which aired during the Rose Bowl, features all three of the vehicles.

Ads show both ersatz and commercial innovations (the Brompton folding bike, the laser keyboard, the 4moms origami stroller) are paired with Honda's own corporate content that tout the 2013 Civic, and the Honda racing program, but also Honda's ASIMO robot, and the manufacturer's foray into the wild blue yonder with HondaJet.

“We wanted to not only showcase Honda's latest example of [its innovation philosophy], but embrace the other...dreamers and doers out there who share our way of thinking," said Jason Sperling, SVP, group creative director at the agency, who adds that the campaign is a kind of innovators "group hug.”

Ellen Kuras, who was behind the lens for films like “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Blow,” is director of photography, and the ads are set to the music of Santigold.

The agency says the new ads will air during primetime rotation on ABC, CW, Fox, NBC, cable and during NBA and NFL AFC Wildcard and Divisional games, as well as in nearly 60 markets during the BCS Championship.

Honda is also going with spot buys during the broadcast of the Grammy Awards on Feb. 10 on CBS. The company will air the 30-second ads in its 60 top markets during the show, and Honda will run a gatefold print ad in “Entertainment Weekly” and a YouTube masthead takeover is scheduled the day after the show.

Not least is a social media vector to get people talking about the cars and the innovations featured in the ads on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram to help create buzz and curiosity around the innovations and the new Civic.

Print will run in  ESPN The Magazine, Elle, Food Network Magazine, InStyle, GQ and People. Online ads include home-page takeovers on Yahoo and MSN, full-episode streaming and within “March Madness on Demand” and “NFL Everywhere.”

Honda Cars : How Honda Turned a Car Into A Mixing Deck | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

Unknown | 7:16 AM

Honda Marketing

This picture really gives the FIT Twist scale.  Nice to know it's not too small.

I’ve got two turntables and a Honda Fit.
With each new model year carmakers roll out vehicles with slicker designs, better fuel economy, and higher-tech features, all in an effort to entice consumers to choose their particular configuration of steel, gears, and rubber. But for some it takes more than the promise of sweet speakers and killer fuel injection to connect with a car. They’d prefer to see it transformed into full-fledged mixing deck.

Honda did just that with its Drivemixer project to launch the Fit Twist to the Brazilian market. By hacking the vehicle, all of its features and functions were turned into musical outputs that were then "played" by N.A.S.A (also of Squeak E. Clean, aka Sam Spiegel, and Brazilian DJ Zegon, aka Ze Gonzales).

Needing to connect with young, urban consumers, agency F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi focused on current cultural shifts within the country when creating the Honda Drivemixer.

“Through market research, we came to understand that Brazil’s new generation of consumers is more independent, both economically and socially, more educated and thus, more willing to make his/her own purchase decisions that’ll reflect their own unique personality. For a patriarchal society, this is nothing short of a small, quiet revolution,” says account planning director Dorian Dack. “To credibly position the product as a car that reflects this new generation and what it stands for, we knew we had to be authentic and credible in both our message and delivery. We knew we couldn’t just piggyback any sort of cultural fad and call it ours… we had to go out and risk doing something genuinely surprising, something bold. We went out on a limb. We came up with a fresh idea that expresses both what the car and its consumer stands for.”

Agency creatives Isabelle de Vooght, Isaac Serruya and Roberta Harada say that once boldness was they key element, they started thinking "how cool would it be if the car was…?" “That’s when we decided to give it a twist: We wanted to turn it into a fully functioning operable DJ mixer."

They started meeting with musicians, tech experts, sound designers, and producers, and a specific microcontroller board was developed in order to transform the car’s signals into MIDI notes, meaning most of its features gained musical functions.

Sam Speigel and Zegon were brought in to compose an original track that would be performed on the car. “The track was composed with the car in mind, but we made the music first and figured out how to control it after,” says Spiegel. “Using Ableton Live we got into the wiring and computer chips of the car. We used the on/off switches in there to turn them into MIDI switches. Then rewiring that using Ableton Live with the sampler playback we were able to turn those into triggers for our sounds. It was amazing.”

The final musical element was also the biggest: a giant turntable that triggers a sound when the car drives. “We wanted two… but that was too crazy,” says Spiegel, I mean… who wouldn’t want a giant turntable that your car can turn?

With the car wired up and set atop the largest turntable you’ve ever seen, Spiegel and Zegon had the tricky task of actually performing the track they’d composed. The colorful sticky notes served that as indicators make the process look complicated but Spiegel says it wasn’t. “We had to learn how to play the car [as an instrument] but elements were split up so well that it was easier to play than it looked.”

Keeping true to the remixing concept, Honda released the track, “Overdrive,” to the 10 best Brazilian music and entertainment blogs, inviting them to submit a remix of the track. The remixes were the compiled into a widget so the audience could vote on their favorite one. The winner, music blog My Cool, was awarded professional DJ equipment. Check the winning remix here:
