Honda Cars : Is this what the Next Gen Acura CL could look like if they ever went back to it? | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

For those of you who don't know, Acura awhile ago had a 2door Acura TL called the CL (C standing for coupe?).  To my knowledge it didn't light it up the sales numbers and was silently retired in 2003 (running from 1997).  It was a nice car, but pretty bland for my tastes, the 1998-2002 Honda Accord Coupe had much more style in my opinion.  Anyway, I stumbled across this with no source as to where it came from (I'd love to give credit if possible though).  Looks nice.

Production model due in three years
Acura is previewing a new crossover with the Concept SUV-X exhibited at 2013 Auto Shanghai starting today.

The Japanese marque announced at the beginning of the month a new concept for the Chinese auto show and we assumed it was a crossover.

We were right as the Concept SUV-X is a small SUV which was designed specifically for the local market. It represents Acura's first ever concept to be unveiled outside of North America.

It has been confirmed a production version will go on sale in China in approximately three years from now.

The concept is being characterized as offering "emotional and sharp styling and driving performance" along with "environmental performance" and the utility you normally get in an SUV.

Unfortunately, Acura did not release any details about what powers the Concept SUV-X but most likely some form of hybrid tech is included.

Partnership seeks to broaden efforts to address climate change by giving Honda and Acura customers an opportunity to save money with solar power

SAN MATEO, Calif. & TORRANCE, Calif.--()--SolarCity® (Nasdaq: SCTY) and American Honda Motor Co., Inc., today announced a partnership to make solar power more affordable and available to Honda and Acura customers in the U.S., providing a cleaner source of electricity at a lower cost than utility-supplied power. The partnership, which is aimed at addressing global climate change by reducing CO2 emissions from home, business, and transportation energy use, establishes an investment fund to finance $65 million in solar projects to assist Honda and Acura customers with the initial cost of solar power installation. Millions of Honda and Acura customers and hundreds of dealerships in SolarCity’s 14-state service area may be eligible for the special offer, and SolarCity and Honda expect to be able to accommodate thousands of interested homeowners in the fund.*
“This is an unprecedented partnership—few companies have made a more substantive or comprehensive commitment to environmental responsibility than Honda.”
Honda and Acura dealerships in SolarCity’s service territory may also be able to take advantage of the offer to install affordable solar power through the partnership. Additionally, Honda and SolarCity will explore opportunities to integrate solar power and electric vehicle recharging, envisioning a future in which Fit EV and Accord Plug-In Hybrid owners will be able to charge their cars from the power of the sun, thereby reducing household CO2 emissions to nearly zero.

Honda, recognized for its leadership in producing fuel-efficient, low-emission vehicles, and SolarCity, America’s leading full-service solar power provider, have established the $65 million investment fund to remove a pervasive obstacle to the broader adoption of solar power: the high initial investment associated with installing solar power. Through the partnership, the first for any automaker, Honda and Acura customers and dealerships will be able to install solar power with little or no upfront cost, depending on the customer’s choice of plans. Customers will be given a choice to pre-pay for their solar electricity or pay a monthly payment that will be lower than the cost of their current utility bill, with insurance, repairs and monitoring service included.

SolarCity has developed a proprietary system that has greatly simplified the process by which homeowners can go solar. From an initial phone call or Web consultation, SolarCity can quickly assess whether a homeowner is a good candidate for solar, and can design a custom solar system to meet a customer’s specific energy needs. In addition to offering affordable solar power, the partnership will enable owners of Honda and Acura products to make energy-efficiency upgrades—such as weatherization and more efficient heating and cooling—that can further reduce their home energy consumption.

SolarCity offers service in all or parts of Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington. Honda and Acura customers interested in these new clean energy options can find more information at www.hondasolarcity.com.

Executive Quotes
“At Honda, we are always looking at ways to improve the lives of our customers while reducing our environmental footprint,” said Steven Center, vice president of the Environmental Business Development Office of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “We believe Honda and Acura customers are going to be very interested in going solar once they find out that they can install solar at their home with little or no upfront cost, can lower their monthly utility bill, and can make a positive contribution to protecting the environment.”

“By making it easier and more affordable for its customers to use clean power, Honda is reinforcing the fact that solar is the new normal,” said SolarCity CEO Lyndon Rive. “This is an unprecedented partnership—few companies have made a more substantive or comprehensive commitment to environmental responsibility than Honda.”

Honda Cars : MotorTrend: 2014 Acura RLX First Drive | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

Unknown | 6:45 AM
Acura News
Acura News

Acura has had a tough time hawking its RL flagship luxury sedan these past few years. With U.S. monthly sales in the double digits for all of 2012, it's refreshing to hear from an Acura rep that the biggest thing the new RLX shares with its predecessor is the first two letters of its name.

Indeed, the majority of the car has been redesigned for the new model year -- enough to market the car as an all-new machine for a very new era. With increased comfort and luxury a priority for the car's middle-aged, baby boomer target market, the RLX has a wheelbase and track stretched 2 inches over the RL's, giving it an improvement in interior space, especially in the limo-like rear cabin, where 38.8 inches of legroom is enough to best the Mercedes E-Class, Audi A6, and Lexus GS. Despite its increased interior dimensions and slightly increased width, overall vehicle length is roughly the same as on the old car, meaning it's not any tougher to park or maneuver. In fact, if anything, it's slightly easier to steer this full-size luxury car around town, thanks to Acura's new Precision All-Wheel Steer system. PAWS alters thetoe angle of the rear wheels with steering and braking input, making the car more agile and stable when being driven quickly, as well as slightly reducing the car's turning radius.

Acura freshened up the exterior design and skinned the doors, front fenders, and engine hood in aluminum. (The total weight of the RLX is down more than 160 pounds on the RL; it's also the most aluminum-intensive Acura since the original NSX supercar of the 1990s.) Acura's designers went for strong horizontal character lines along the side of the car, with a distinctive pair of jewel-like LED headlights up front that will likely become a familial feature in models to come. The overall design is more elegant than flashy, in line with Acura's current sedan styling directive.

The interior has also been revamped. Our car was trimmed in high-quality, well-stitched leather and looked worth every penny of its price. The most distinctive new feature will be the twin LCD display screens. The upper screen primarily displays the navigation, and the lower one is for radio and climate controls. It's an evolution of Acura's previous system's single-line monotone display for audio and climate settings, and with its new full-color screen and haptic feedback, it works well. The next-generation version of AcuraLink also rolls out with the new RLX, using a button on the ceiling -- OnStar style -- for route information, vehicle assistance, emergency services, and other features based on subscription level. (The most basic features are free for three years.)

The RLX also introduces several Acura "firsts" that we suspect will trickle down to other models in time. The engine is an all-new 3.5-liter V-6 that features both direct injection and cylinder deactivation (Variable Cylinder Management), along with Acura's proprietary VTEC variable-valve timing setup. Though the engine has been slightly downsized from the RL's 3.7-liter six, output is up by 10 hp for 310 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque. A revised six-speed automatic remains the only transmission choice, and Acura's Sportshift sequential paddle shifters are mounted on the steering wheel. Fuel economy is said to be 20 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, with a combined rating of 24 mpg -- a 22 percent improvement over the outgoing RL.

Other Acura firsts in the RLX aim at taking safety to the next level. The RLX is the first Acura with an active lane-keeping system, knee airbags, and revised adaptive cruise control with what Acura calls Low-Speed Follow -- the ability to brake the car all the way down to a stop when the car ahead stops, without driver involvement. Acura expects the RLX to garner a Top Safety Pick + rating from the IIHS when tested later this year.

The majority of the car was redesigned -- enough to market it as an all-new machine for a very new era

We got a chance to sample the RLX around some of Northern California's finest wine-country roads in Napa Valley, along with a brief stop at Sonoma Raceway (formerly Infineon and Sears Point) to sample the car on a short-track configuration. On the road, the RLX is comfortable and fairly quiet, with excellent isolation from wind and engine noise, thanks to new acoustic glass and added sound-deadening, but a little more tire noise than we'd like finds its way inside the cabin. Nevertheless, for a car that Acura markets as a somewhat sporty offering, the noise is acceptable.

The ride is on the sporty side of comfortable, with generally high levels of compliance and control. Acura's new belt-driven electric power steering is light and somewhat lacking in on-center feel, though it feels precise when carving through curvier roads -- a benefit in our testing environment that made for an entertaining drive. At the track, the Acura proved surprisingly fun to drive for a front-drive sedan, lacking heavy understeer in eight-tenths driving and giving generally neutral behavior. The brakes felt strong without being overassisted and grabby, but even in Sport mode the manual shifts via paddle were a little slow -- both up and down -- for track work. We predict fewer than 1 percent of RLXs built will ever set tire to track, and found the shift times adequate for road use for the other 99 percent of RLX drivers. A hybrid all-wheel-drive RLX is under development, with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, 370 hp, and a goal of at least 30 mpg combined. After a brief drive in a prototype, we're able to say it'll be worth the wait. Sales for the FWD RLX start in March for impatient folks.

POWERTRAIN
The 2014 RLX is powered by an all-new 3.5-liter Direct Injection SOHC
i-VTEC® V-6 engine matched to a Sequential SportShift 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters. This is the first Acura production car to feature "Earth Dreams Technology," which is comprised of a next-generation set of technological advancements to the engine, which greatly enhance both driving performance and fuel efficiency.
Rated at 310 horsepower and 272 lb.-ft. of torque (SAE net), the V-6 powerplant in the RLX develops an additional 10 horsepower and 1 lb.-ft. of torque compared to the 3.7-liter engine equipped in the RL. For exceptional drivability, the RLX's new 3.5-liter engine produces in excess of 90 percent of its peak torque over a very broad range of engine speeds, from 2,000 rpm to 6,600 rpm.
In spite of the peak horsepower increase, the new engine has impressive EPA- fuel economy ratings for a luxury sedan, with ratings of 20 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. The 3.5-liter engine meets the stringent ULEV-2 California Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions rating.
BODY
The 2014 RLX is larger than the previous RL model in several key exterior dimensions, including width, wheelbase, and front and rear track.  The wheelbase, at 112.2 inches, is two inches longer than the previous RL model, providing more rear passenger room and improving the ride quality in the process. At 74.4 inches wide, the RLX is also a substantial 1.7 inches wider than the previous RL model.
Static and dynamic rigidity and rear lateral stiffness are significantly improved. To increase stiffness and rigidity in key areas without increasing weight, 55 percent of the RLX body in white is made from high-strength steel. Hot-stamped high-strength steel is used in key areas for enhanced safety collision performance, with the added benefit of anticipated high scores in narrow offset, side impact, and roof strength tests. Extensive use of aluminum body components in key areas saves 76.1 pounds compared to traditional all-steel construction.
The 2014 RLX features the world's first Jewel Eye™ LED headlights, which offer outstanding light distribution and excellent down-the-road illumination performance and light characteristics. The RLX taillights utilize periphery LED illumination that is both effective and highly distinctive.
CHASSIS
The standard Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS) system on the RLX continuously monitors and calculates the correct amount of independent rear-wheel steering (toe angle) necessary for driving conditions. As the industry's first left/right independent rear-wheel toe angle control system, P-AWS uses an all-electric system that enhances driving dynamics.
In front, the RLX's new double-wishbone, lower double-joint front suspension with Amplitude Reactive Dampers significantly improves handling agility, driver confidence and security, and ride sophistication. In back, the RLX's multi-link rear suspension is optimized for a flat ride during cornering, confident turning capability, and a smooth ride in a variety of urban, highway and open road scenarios.
Available Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) allows the driver to set a desired speed and a distance interval behind a vehicle detected ahead, allowing the use of cruise control in light traffic. This system is combined with a new Low-Speed Follow capability, which extends the automatic following capability when traffic slows below the set speed. If the vehicle detected ahead is in range of the system and comes to a stop, the RLX will also come to a stop. When the vehicle ahead moves forward, the vehicle icon on the multi-information display will start to blink. With a press of a steering wheel-mounted button or a press of the accelerator pedal, the RLX will resume the prior set speed.
The RLX's high-efficiency Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) enhances vehicle stability when cornering. If vehicle understeer or oversteer is detected, the system selectively reduces power and/or brakes individual wheels to help correct the condition and stabilize the vehicle.
Finally, the available Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) scans the road ahead to actively assist the driver in driving in the middle of a detected lane.
The RLX and RLX with Navigation grades feature 7-spoke 18x8J noise-reducing alloy wheels while the Technology, Krell Audio and Advance grades feature larger 19x8J noise-reducing alloy wheels. The special noise-reducing design lowers tire noise by 7-decibels across the audible frequency range.
INTERIOR OVERVIEW
The 2014 RLX interior is an all-new design that combines welcoming five–passenger comfort with by far the most luxury and technology ever offered in an Acura. High-end premium elements like a carefully stitched leather instrument panel cover, soft-touch materials, premium finishes and rich wood-grain accents combine with an intuitive new control layout to create a distinctive environment in tune with this luxury performance sedan's clearly defined sporting character.

Q&A: MAC CHURCHILL -- ACURA DEALER ADVISORY BOARD

Paring down vehicle inventories and successfully launching flagship products are the big tests for Acura this year.

The new RLX sedan goes on sale in March, followed by the redesigned MDX crossover in the middle of the year. Acura dealers are working with the manufacturer on launch strategies, says Mac Churchill, who owns an Acura dealership in Fort Worth, Texas.

Staff Reporter Amy Wilson spoke with Churchill, chairman of the Acura Dealer Advisory Board, about what's coming up for Acura in 2013.

How was 2012 for Acura dealers?
Much improved. Our sales were up 26.7 percent. Everybody's net profits were up accordingly, generally across the board. Of course, this was the year without the tsunami. It was the best sales result since 2007. 2013 is going to be an outstanding year, with the new product they have coming and with the RDX being in full production all year long.

What are the major issues Acura dealers face in 2013?
First is the launch of the 2014 RLX, our new luxury sedan that will be here in March. We're pulling out all the stops on a very successful launch. We've got all kind of new strategies to do that. We're going to try to build an order bank before the car even gets here.

Are you seeing early demand from people in the showroom or folks calling and asking to be put on lists?
Yes. We have lots of customers and lots of questions. We should be getting a couple of cars for them to view in February. There's lots of interest because Acura has not had a real good flagship car, and this will be our answer. [The factory] is going to get us cars ahead of time, and we're going to be able to test drive them and demo them. People will be able to place orders ahead of time, before the production starts.

Will it come across to consumers as a true luxury car?
Absolutely. It's finally there. The valet will park it in front of the restaurants. We've been asking for several years to have a real luxury flagship sedan, and this is the answer.

How will it do against the BMW 5 series and Mercedes-Benz E class?
Those owners are real loyal. But we'll win some over, and we'll win some back.

What else is a major issue for 2013?
We've got to have a successful launch on our flagship SUV, the 2014 MDX, which is still our best-selling model ever. It's really important we have a good launch without challenges.

Do Acura and the dealers still need to work out that launch?
We're working on the strategies. First, we're going to handle the RLX launch, but we've already begun talking about MDX.

Can MDX sales increase with the redesigned model?
Yes. In the South, all-wheel drive is not as big a deal as it is up North in the snow. So we've been pushing for two-wheel drive, and they're going to come through with it. We're super excited. All the Southern states and California have been asking. We were real successful with the two-wheel-drive RDX we asked for. This will be a big deal for us.
Another challenge we have is communications from the factory to the dealer and the dealers back to the factory, so they can have proper input and we can make changes like this two-wheel-drive MDX. They seem to be listening better. They listened to us about designing the launch for the new RLX, so we think we're making progress there.

Has that been a struggle in the past?
Yeah. It's been more of a struggle, more top-down than coming from the dealers up and having an effect. But as of late they've been open-minded and have reacted quickly to some of our suggestions. We're actually getting more face time with Acura senior management. That has a lot to do with it.

What's being done to get sales moving for the ILX small sedan?
They were [too] aggressive on their sales target. That particular market segment is languishing. It's picked up recently since they put some more support on it. Early on, we were doing half the [targeted] sales. But [that's] 25 percent of that market segment, which ain't bad. It's No. 2 in the market segment.

Is it matter of readjusting expectations, or should other things be done?
They're making adjustments. We'll probably see them as early as May. They're going to up the content, improve the inside of the car. More value for the money. In the meantime, they'll have support for the car.

What are the content enhancements?
They haven't told us, but I would suspect they will add leather and power seats and things like that.

And not change the price?
Probably, yes.

How much longer will the TSX stay in the lineup?
They haven't put a timetable on it, but I think through this year anyway.

Does that vanish when the TL replacement arrives next year?
I bet so, yes.

How can Acura best juggle these product initiatives: Getting the ILX moving, keeping the RDX momentum and launching the new RLX and MDX? That's a big slate.
We're working to build a product cadence in lockstep with lots of preparation on the front end and designing our lease strategy around each of the products as they phase out or come in.
So we can transition people into new units and new models as they become available.
We're going to make sure we think out our strategy on the launches so they correspond to the cars and come in in the best manner possible. That's why we're coming with a couple of cars for each dealership to test drive for customers before the [production] cars even get here.

Do dealers see Acura as a premium or luxury brand?
We're trying to be a brand that offers value and not compete against the cigar-and-scotch crowd.

Are you conquesting buyers from other luxury brands or are they mostly moving up from mainstream brands?
Mostly mainstream brands, but we think the new RLX will conquest some of the luxury brands. MDX is currently conquesting some of those luxury brands. BMW and Lexus, for sure, and Infiniti.

What do Acura dealers think about the advertising account being put up for review?
Most of them thought it was overdue. Competition always makes you better. [Incumbent] RPA may ultimately end up with it.
But until you see what else is out there and how creative other people are, you can't be certain you're getting the best bang for your buck in advertising.

Do dealers want a new advertising vision for Acura? The Seinfeld commercial was perceived as cute, but does that get the job done?
We have great Super Bowl ads. But it's those ads that go on all year long that beat the drum to help you make sales that are so important.
One or two splashes doesn't make an advertising campaign. And a real marketing campaign embodies all the different media, whether it's billboards or radio or television. It might be special events, but you've got to bring them all together and have a focus.
We haven't done a real good job of explaining the benefits of owning an Acura.

Does Acura have anything new in the works in terms of a facility image program?
They haven't come with any kind of program. I'm sure they've thought about it, as many manufacturers are. They do have a design model if you want to upgrade your store. They have not come with any extra money to help us. No hard pressure.

How does the certified-used program work? Are there ways to improve it?
We have made recommendations. The certification process isn't the problem. We just need more advertising and promotion in that area.
They're trying to put a plan together. They've already come with some interest rate support on some of the cars, so they've helped.
Is it final? Do we have a year's deal laid out? Not that I'm aware of yet. We're working with them to get a plan into effect that can be ongoing, that we don't have to reinvent each year.
We asked for co-op money. We asked for point-of-purchase products. We asked for a portfolio. We asked for incentive money for the certified cars.

Is anything still missing from the product lineup?
We have the NSX coming. It's not a volume car. We're making plans and talking about it already. It's a year and a half away anyway. I really don't know.

Once the NSX is out, will you have a full lineup?
We'll have a very good core. We probably need to find some other niches. I would say a convertible, a coupe.
They are not in the works, although I'm sure they're thinking about it and looking at the market segments they need to try to attack.

Honda Cars : Honda and Acura first automakers to offer Siri “Eyes Free” | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

Acura News

by Nick Jaynes of www.digitaltrends.com

Nine automakers have agreed to welcome Siri into their vehicles. Honda and Acura are the fist out the gate for 2013 on selected models. Unfortunately, details on what Siri will be capable of accomplishing are slim.

Both Honda and Acura announced this morning that both would be integrating the hotly anticipated Apple Siri “Eyes Free” into a select few of their vehicles this year.

As soon as the systems are in place, 2013 Honda and Acura owners with an iPhone running iOS 6 will be able to call upon Siri to execute a number of tasks all the while keeping the iPhone screen from lighting up. This allows the driver to keep his or her hands on the steering wheel and eyes on the road.

What are these tasks and how will specifically will Siri be integrated into the Honda and Acura infotainment systems? According to Honda Public Relations Manager Robyn Eagles, “Siri Eyes Free Mode will allow users to speak in their natural voice to perform a host of communication tasks, including make calls from a phone list, create text and email messages, and have incoming texts read to them via voice commands without having to interact with their phone’s visual display.”

The Honda and Acura vehicles scheduled to see the Eyes Free integration are the newest in the lineup: the Accord from Honda; and the RDX and the ILX from Acura.

So far, nine automakers have signed agreements with Apple to include Siri Eyes Free into their infotainment systems: BMW, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, Toyota, Honda, and Chrysler. Honda, the parent company of Acura, appears to be the first to the game with this announcement.

How and when other automakers will massage Siri into their pre-existing systems has yet to be seen. As soon as more information is learned, we’ll be sure to bring it to you.

Additional details on key advances and technologies for the all-new 2014 RLX:
  • Class leading interior space based on the RLX's longer wheelbase and efficient packaging. At 196.1 inches, the RLX is similar in length to the outgoing RL, but it has a two-inch longer wheelbase and is nearly two inches wider, placing the new RLX well above the norm in the mid-luxury class. The flagship RLX sedan has up to three inches more rear legroom than competing models, including the BMW 535i, Lexus GS350 and Audi A6.
  • Extensive use of lightweight materials includes the application of strength steel to 55 percent of the body, and the intensive use of aluminum—for the front fenders, hood, steering hangar beam, front and rear bumper beams, front subframe, and all-new "hybrid" front and rear door panels (steel inner structure mated to aluminum outer skin). The RLX weighs in at 3,933 pounds. Static bending and torsional body rigidity are up 52 percent and 46 percent, respectively.
  • Jewel-Eye LED headlights (an Acura first) LED lamps enhance the RLX's modern and distinctive appearance while providing outstanding light distribution and improved down-the-road illumination.
  • Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™ offers a wide range of search options including local search functionality and AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic™ for both highways and surface streets.
  • Agile Handling Assist (an Acura first) uses active braking to help the driver smoothly and easily trace the desired line through a curve with smaller steering inputs.
  • Electric Parking Brake (an Acura first) provides one-touch parking brake activation.
  • Automatic Brake Hold (an Acura first) maintains the vehicle's position when the driving or parking brake are released until the throttle is depressed.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow (an Acura first), allows the RLX to independently maintain a set following distance in low-speed traffic situations, including stop and go traffic, and to initiate vehicle braking when necessary.
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW) uses a camera mounted in the upper portion of the windshield to detect vehicles ahead of the RLX and audibly and visually alert the driver when it determines a frontal collision with a detected vehicle is possible.
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW) uses the same windshield-mounted camera to detect lane markings on the road and alerts the driver if the vehicle is wandering from a detected lane.
  • Front seatbelt e-pretensioners use electronic control to reduce belt tension under normal driving conditions, while also enabling automatic belt tensioning in hard cornering maneuvers or in the event of a collision.
  • Multi-angle rearview camera with dynamic guidelines uses dynamic guidelines that reflect steering wheel inputs on the display to aid in backup maneuvers.
  • Capless fueling (an Acura first) eliminates the fuel cap and improves ease of fueling.

Honda Cars : Acura 2014 MDX Prototype Makes World Debut at North American International Auto Show | 2013 New Honda Car Reviews 0

Unknown | 6:49 AM
Acura News
Acura News

The 2014 Acura MDX Prototype made its world debut today at the 2013 North American International Auto Show, offering a strong indication of the styling and design direction for the third generation of the popular, 7-passenger Acura MDX performance luxury SUV, launching by mid-2013 in both all-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive layouts.

"Our goal is to advance on MDX's already great dynamic performance while improving fuel economy and luxury comfort," said Mike Accavitti, vice president of national marketing operations. "Building on the great momentum we established in 2012 with the launch this year of our flagship RLX, followed later this year by a terrific new luxury SUV in MDX we are very excited about the direction of the Acura brand. And we are truly looking forward to a great 2013."

The "Aero Sculpture" styling of the 2014 MDX Prototype pursues the direction of a smart, compact and premium appearance with low, wide and sleek proportions; a clean, efficient and uncluttered design; and elegant, premium detailing, including the signature Acura Jewel Eye™ LED headlights. This "aero" image also reflects significant gains in aerodynamic efficiency, up 16 percent compared to the outgoing 2013 MDX, achieved through extensive testing in Honda R&D Americas' new wind-tunnel laboratory in Raymond, Ohio – where the vehicle is being created.

The 2014 MDX Prototype's sculpted exterior and arcing roofline (1.5-inches lower than the outgoing model) encase what will be an even more spacious and versatile cabin compared to the outgoing 2013 MDX. The 2014 MDX Prototype features a longer wheelbase that enhances ride quality, increases second-row legroom, and improves third-row seat access.

"While we aren't showcasing the interior today, I can assure you it will further improve the already great functionality in the cabin and cargo area while really amping up luxury, comfort and quiet," added Jon Ikeda, chief designer, Acura Design Studio. "And that's really the focus of this new MDX, delivering outstanding luxury performance and family capability in a more refined and alluring package."

In response to strong demand from consumers in warm weather markets Acura also will, for the first time, offer a front-wheel drive version of MDX in addition to the all-wheel drive (SH-AWD) model that has earned MDX a reputation as a leader in dynamic handling and all-weather performance for a luxury SUV.

The 2014 MDX will also feature an all-new, more rigid and lightweight chassis, including new front and rear suspension designs that deliver a more refined, confidence-inspiring, and sporty driving character. An all-new, direct-injected 3.5-liter i-VTEC SOHC V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) will deliver improved torque and more spirited performance while realizing a significant increase in fuel efficiency to class-leading levels. Special attention was also paid to improving cabin quietness, which is greatly enhanced by the vehicle's all-new chassis and body design and new sound-deadening techniques.

The 2014 MDX also will be equipped with a broad array of advanced safety technologies, including the next generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure and the available Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) systems, as well as visibility technologies such as the Multi-Angle Rearview Camera and the available Blind Spot Information (BSI), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), and Active Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow. Further, the 2014 MDX is designed to achieve top-level safety ratings, including a 5-star Overall Vehicle Score from the NHTSA and a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the IIHS. All 2013 Acura models other than the outgoing ZDX achieved at least a TOP SAFETY PICK safety rating, while the TL sedan was one of the first two vehicles in the industry to achieve TOP SAFETY Pick+ status.

The new MDX will also feature a full array of advanced information technologies, including the next-generation AcuraLink cloud-based connected car system featuring Pandora® connectivity, SiriusXM™ radio, SMS text messaging, and cloud-based Aha™ by Harman connectivity that brings thousands of personalized news, information and media feeds into the vehicle via the customer's compatible smartphone and data plan. A premium Acura/ELS® audio system will be available on the new MDX. Next-generation AcuraLink will also be available with a host of fee-based convenience, assistive and security features, such as automated crash notification, remote locking/unlocking, emergency "SOS" call feature, and live-operator concierge services.

With the introduction of the all-new 2014 Acura MDX production will move from Alliston, Ontario, to the company's vehicle and V-6 engine manufacturing facility in Lincoln, Alabama. Using domestic and globally sourced parts, the MDX is built exclusively in North America.
